Professor Jane Sturgis Hallinger, English educator at Pasadena City College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in English education.
Ms. Hallinger is an accomplished writer, speaker and educator who has dedicated more than five decades of her career to teaching and administration at Pasadena City College. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in speech from DePauw University and a Master of Arts in communications from Indiana University, she spent several years writing for television news stations in New Mexico and Texas before moving into academia. She began her career with Pasadena City College in 1971 as a tutor and reader, becoming a professor of English, humanities, and film in 1978. After continuing her education at California State University, where she completed a Master of Arts in English in 1982, she was named as the vice president of Pasadena City College and a member of the school’s Foundation Board, roles she proudly held until 1989.
Since 1991, Ms. Hallinger has served as a member of the Santa Rosa school accreditation team, through which she has built upon her work with several other accreditation boards across the state of California through the 1990s. Likewise, she remains active on the Accreditation Commission and as a representative of the Great Teachers Conference. Ms. Hallinger’s writing on California state academic policy has been published prolifically, and she is the author of numerous works of short fiction and “In the Midst of Life,” a volume of collected poetry.
Extensively well-traveled, Ms. Hallinger has journeyed internationally to promote education, technological integration and social justice. In addition to her work with the Office of Foreign Affairs, she helped to establish ComPeace, a nonprofit organization that seeks to promote technology access for youth. Her work as an ambassador for youth has included trips to China, Cambodia, North Korea and Vietnam, where she helped establish an orphanage and fostered young girls. Furthermore, Ms. Hallinger was instrumental in the development of a sister city relationship between Pasadena, California, and Beijing’s Xicheng district.
In recognition of her dedication to her work, both at Pasadena City College and in the larger community, Ms. Hallinger has been honored by the California State Assembly, the Vet Society, and was presented with a Distinguished Faculty Award by the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges. She is a grantee of the Pasadena City College Foundation and a recipient of the prestigious Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, among many other accolades.
