Dr. S. Kay Rockwell, Professor at University of Nebraska, Lincoln, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Education.
Now retired, Dr. S. Kay Rockwell is a veteran educator who devoted over 40 years of her life to the profession. She spent nearly the entirety of her career at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, having held several different positions there from 1979 until her retirement in 2003. Most recently, she had served as a professor, holding that title from 1990 to 2003. During this time she also served as an evaluation specialist, a position she began in 1984. In her time at the University of Nebraska, she also held the positions of evaluation technologist, and advisory board member of the Department of Adult Education and Social Foundation. Prior to all of this, she spent four years at Lincoln General Hospital as an instructor and assistant director of nursing education.
She began her career in nursing. In 1960, she graduated from the nursing program at Lincoln General Hospital, and then in 1962 she graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After a time, she returned to school to further her education on a different career path. In 1975, she received a Master of Arts in Adult and Continuing Education from the University of Nebraska, and then in 1984 she received a PhD in Community and Human Resources. Dr. Rockwell has the distinction of being the first in her family to graduate from college.
Passionate about helping others, Dr. Rockwell’s parents instilled the value of volunteerism within her and to this day, she strives to care for others. She recently returned from Kitui, Africa, where she helped rebuild and expand the preschool and the library at Chuluni. Dr. Rockwell serves on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Emeriti Board and has been instrumental in creating opportunities for retired professional staff by starting monthly Coffee House Chats for colleagues to connect, and tour new buildings and programs. Dr. Rockwell is a board member of the UNL Women’s Club and focuses on introducing women to life beyond the City of Lincoln by planning an annual Fall Tour, among other activities. She is a member of the Friendship Force of Lincoln, volunteer in the Farmer-to-Farmer program in USAID, a docent and tour guide for The Ferguson House in downtown Lincoln and a participant of the Open World program which introduced international young professionals to democracy in the United States. Furthermore, Dr, Rockwell is launching into a six year project with Engineers Without Boarders at UNL called Goats for Voo where she and others provided goats to over 100 HIV positive orphans, establish an educational program and positively transformed the community of Voo in Kenya.
A specialist in evaluation, Dr. Rockwell spent a great deal of her time at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln involved in evaluation. Given her expertise, she works as a consultant, and often presents at workshops and symposia in the field. In 1990, she served as the north central regional representative for the Extension Education Evaluation Topical Interest Group of the American Evaluation Association. Dr. Rockwell is a recipient of the 2017 Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, and is a Distinguished Humanitarian.
