Cal Clark, Political Scientist and Professor Emeritus, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in political science education.
After educating generations of students for more than four decades, Dr. Clark has enjoyed the title of professor emeritus since 2013. He had previous been the Director of the MPA Program at Auburn University from 2002 to 2012, in addition to his role as a professor within the Department of Political Science at the institution since 1992. Furthermore, Dr. Clark served as the Alumni Professor of Political Science from 1998 to 2003 and as the Department Head of the Political Science from 1992 to 1995. Prior to joining the faculty at the institution, Dr. Clark taught and directed programs at the University of Wyoming and commenced his career as a professor in the Department of Government at New Mexico State University.
Dr. Clark’s interest in politics was developed while matriculating at Beloit College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1966. It was during his freshman year that he took a government course that would formulate the trajectory of his career. Combining this newfound interest with his affinity for academia and research, he made the decision to become a professor in political science. He later earned a PhD in political science from the University of Illinois in 1973. He attributes his success to Milton Feder at Beloit College and to Jeffrey Houff and Richard Merritt at the University of Illinois. Dr. Clark maintains the highlight of his career has been received the Minority Achievement Award from Auburn University, which he received in 2007. In his career, he has received a number of prestigious awards and accolades, included being honored for his novel “The Black Angels” during the Alabama Book Festival in 2017 and a Distinguished Service Award from the American Association for Chinese Studies in 2015. Furthermore, he has received an Appreciate Award from the East Alabama Chapter of the National Forum for Black Public Administrators, an Outstanding Graduate Faculty Award from the Student Government Association and a Pi Sigma Alpha Award from the American Political Science Association among many other achievements.
Dr. Clark has remained a prolific author and editor throughout his career. One of his most recent publications has been “A Straight Jacket for Sarah,” which was published in 2018 by All Things That Matter Press. He co-authored “Challenging NeoLiberalism: The Economic Miracles in Chile and Taiwan,” as well as “Taiwain’s Political Economy: Meeting Challenges, Pursuing Progress,” and “Women in Taiwan’s Politics: Overcoming Barriers to Women’s Participation in a Modernizing Society.” Dr. Clark has been a member of a number of various organizations during his career, including the American Association for Chinese Studies, the Southern Political Science Association, the Western Political Science Association, the Alabama Political Science Association and the International Political Science Association.
