Dwayne C. Joseph, PhD, Assistant Professor at Morehouse College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Engineering Education.

Dr. Joseph has established a distinguished career in academia and engineering education, currently serving as an assistant professor at his alma mater, Morehouse College, a private, historically Black, men’s liberal arts college in Atlanta, Georgia, since 2012. In this capacity, he prepares students for liberal arts degrees before they transfer to engineering programs at partner institutions. His teaching portfolio includes courses in engineering graphics, computational linear algebra and autonomous navigation. Dr. Joseph is also the dual degree engineering coordinator for the Atlanta University Center Consortium, where he works to bridge academic gaps between institutions and enhance student outcomes.

Throughout his nearly 25-year professional journey, Dr. Joseph has demonstrated a commitment to innovative pedagogy and curriculum development. At the University of Michigan, he developed a groundbreaking course for the robotics department that introduces first-year students to computational linear algebra before their calculus sequence. This approach enables students to immediately apply mathematical and programming concepts to solve robotics problems, fostering early engagement with real-world applications.

Currently, Dr. Joseph focuses on developing curricula and outreach initiatives rather than publishing academic papers. He offers a computational analogy course and leads the distributed teaching collaborative, which packages robotics courses for delivery to other historically Black colleges and universities and minority-serving institutions. Dr. Joseph’s outreach efforts extend to middle and high school students, including a dual language robotics program conducted in Spanish and English. He has also developed targeted programs for Black male students in grades seven through 11. As part of these initiatives, he organizes educational trips to Latin American countries, such as Panama, where students explore the intersection of engineering and major infrastructure projects like the Panama Canal.

Dr. Joseph’s academic foundation began with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and physics from Morehouse College in Atlanta in 2000. He continued his studies at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, earning a master’s degree in 2004, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in theoretical physics in 2012. Dr. Joseph’s educational journey was shaped by his early experiences in a dual degree program at Morehouse College, which inspired him to return as an educator dedicated to better preparing future engineers.

In addition to his academic roles, Dr. Joseph is actively involved with several professional and civic organizations. He serves on the faculty development and research committee of the American Society of Engineering Education and is a member of the ethics committee board for the Medical Society of Engineering Education. He is also a member of the National Society of Black Engineers and the National Society of Black Physicists. Additionally, Dr. Joseph mentors students through the McNair Research Program, volunteers at soup kitchens in Atlanta and acts as a community judge for local science fairs.

For his pioneering work at the University of Michigan, Dr. Joseph received the Provost Teaching Innovation Prize in 2021. He attributes much of his success to his ability to forge meaningful connections with colleagues, friends and family members who have supported his growth. He also notes that his mindset of creating his own path and seeking alternative solutions has been a key factor in overcoming challenges throughout his career.

Dr. Joseph aspires to become a tenured professor and establish a robotics minor at Morehouse College with plans to expand this offering across all historically Black colleges and universities. He is also committed to realizing a consortium that will serve as a central hub for robotics curricula and support for minority-serving institutions.
