Brooke M. Odle, PhD, assistant professor at Hope College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in biomedical engineering.

Dr. Odle has established herself as a distinguished expert in biomechanics, currently serving as an assistant professor in the engineering department at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, since 2020. Her tenure at the institution is marked by her dedication to collaborative research and teaching, particularly in integrating engineering and clinical tools into the curriculum. Dr. Odle’s commitment to education is evident in her efforts to engage undergraduate students in biomechanics research, fostering an environment where students can thrive academically and professionally.

In addition to her role at Hope College, Dr. Odle has been an investigator at the Advanced Platform Technology (APT) Center in Cleveland since 2019. Her work here complements her academic pursuits, allowing her to contribute to cutting-edge research while maintaining a strong focus on educational development. Located within the Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Administration Medical Center, the APT Center focuses on biotechnology research where investigators develop advanced assistive or restorative technologies for veterans with sensory, motor or cognitive deficits and limb loss.

Before these roles, Dr. Odle was a faculty fellow at Hope College from 2019 to 2020. Her tenure on campus came after several years at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, where she was a postdoctoral scholar and postdoctoral fellow between 2015 and 2019. Dr. Odle began as a community assistant in the residence life office at the New Jersey Institute of Technology from 2009 to 2011, where she was pursuing her advanced degrees.

Dr. Odle’s academic achievements include a Bachelor of Science in bioengineering and biomedical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 2006, followed by a Master of Science and a PhD, both in bioengineering and biomedical engineering, from the New Jersey Institute of Technology in 2009 and 2014, respectively. These educational accomplishments have been instrumental in shaping her career, enabling her to contribute significantly to research and teaching.

Dr. Odle’s dedication extends beyond academia into civic involvement. She has served as the secretary for the Northeast Ohio Professionals chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers since 2015 and has volunteered with the Girl Scouts of the United States of America since 2017. Dr. Odle’s commitment to community service reflects her upbringing, influenced by a family deeply rooted in education and civic duty.

As a dedicated scholar, Dr. Odle’s contributions include co-authoring a book chapter titled “Mitigating Bias in Machine Learning,” published by McGraw-Hill in 2025. This work underscores her interest in addressing ethical considerations within technology, aligning with her teaching philosophy emphasizing social responsibility.

Dr. Odle’s interests in biomechanics, spinal cord injury, computational modeling, human movement and rehabilitation engineering have been instrumental in her career. Having conducted extensive research, she is currently studying the implementation and evaluation of closed-loop control systems. These studies are to ensure the patient’s ability to maintain standing balance after spinal cord injury, among other goals.

Looking ahead, Dr. Odle envisions integrating her research with nursing at Hope College, fostering collaboration between engineering and nursing students on design projects. She also aims to enhance hands-on opportunities for students through her involvement with the American Society for Biomechanics, ensuring they gain practical experience essential for success in their future careers.
