Deborah Ann Konkowski, PhD, Professor Emeritus at the U.S. Naval Academy, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Higher Education.
Dr. Konkowski has led a long and distinguished career in academia, beginning in 1987 as an assistant professor at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Over the years, she progressed from an associate professor from 1991 to 1997 to a full research professor, a position she held until her retirement in 2021. Dr. Konkowski is now recognized as a professor emeritus. In addition to her contributions to the academy, she served as a visiting associate professor and visiting professor at the University of London.
Possessing a rich educational background, Dr. Konkowski received a Bachelor of Science in physics from Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California, in 1977 and a Doctor of Philosophy in physics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1983. Her fascination with astronomy, physics and mathematics began while she was coming of age. She would frequently read books about the stars and galaxies and, over the years, gained inspiration from her calculus and physics teacher to pursue the field. Apart from her formal education, Dr. Konkowski has been actively engaged in her professional community through membership in the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physical Society, the American Mathematics Society, the New York Academy of Science, and the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation, among others.
During her tenure in education, Dr. Konkowski was fortunate to spend two years in England as a research fellow at Queen Mary College, University of London. She still attends lectures remotely in retirement. As a seasoned scholar, Dr. Konkowski has contributed numerous articles to professional journals, including the peer-reviewed journal Physical Review D, reporting on physical and quantum gravity and general relativity and gravitation. In light of her success, she received a Research Award from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2010. Dr. Konkowski feels blessed to have earned the support of her colleagues and other instructors throughout her tenure.
