Joan C. Nielsen, BA, MSE, EdS, Professor Emerita at Morningside University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Education.
Ms. Nielsen retired from her long and distinguished career in education at Morningside University, where she became recognized as a professor emerita in 2021. During her tenure, which spanned over two decades, she was instrumental in prepping and teaching course material, writing grants and establishing the institution’s English as a second language program, among other responsibilities. She also had the opportunity to serve as an interim department chair. Ms. Nielsen began her career teaching third-grade and kindergarten students at Battle Creek Public Schools in 1973, where she remained until 1996. She also achieved success as a curriculum director and elementary principal at OABCIG Community School District between 1996 and 2001.
Possessing a rich educational background, Ms. Nielsen received a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education from Upper Iowa University in 1973, a Master of Science in education in elementary administration in 1992, and an Education Specialist degree from Drake University in 1996. She also received numerous educational and professional credentials to support her career. Beyond her formal education, Ms. Nielsen has been actively engaged with several industry-related organizations, which have provided her with insight and expertise. She has been active in the Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, the National Association for Multicultural Education, the National Association for Bilingual Education, the Iowa Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, and the National Association of Colleges for Teacher Education.
Beyond her primary work endeavors, Ms. Nielsen has presented numerous times on various topics, such as teacher evaluation, effective teaching and project proficiency at professional conferences. Throughout her career, she has also secured approximately $3 million worth of grant money, which has been instrumental in supporting diverse educational programs. Crediting much of her success to the collaborative efforts of several individuals she had the pleasure to work with, Ms. Nielsen strongly believes in collaboration to garner the best results. In the coming years, she aims to serve as a valuable resource for teachers and students while helping educators feel more confident and respected.
