Sadik C. Artunç, MLA, FASLA, FCELA, PLA, PE, professor of landscape architecture at Mississippi State University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Education for dedication, achievements, and leadership in higher education and landscape architecture.
Prof. Artunç, recognized for his distinguished tenure in landscape architecture and higher education, has enjoyed a rewarding career for over 50 years. Having joined Mississippi State University in Mississippi State in 2007, he serves as a professor of landscape architecture. He has also been a wetland education theater educator on campus since 2010. During his tenure, Prof. Artunç spent over 15 years as the department head before resigning to return to full-time teaching.
Having begun his teaching career in 1981, Prof. Artunç was a faculty member at Louisiana State University in Shreveport until 2007. Throughout his decades in the classroom, he draws significant satisfaction from seeing his former students take leadership roles and make an impact within the field throughout the United States and beyond. This sense of pride has been the primary reason why Prof. Artunç has been devoted to education for such a long time.
Before pivoting into higher education, Prof. Artunç worked as a planning director at Uludag National Park in his home country of Turkey from 1973 to 1975. Located near Bursa, it is recognized as one of Turkey’s most recognizable winter sports centers, particularly for skiing.
Prof. Artunç graduated from the University of Istanbul in 1972 with a master’s degree in forestry engineering and from the University of Michigan with a master’s degree in landscape architecture in 1981. Besides his formal education, he received professional credentials as a professional engineer and landscape architect.
Training in forestry allowed Prof. Artunç to enter field of landscape architecture, since the subject was not offered as a degree in his country. While pursuing his studies, he worked with Ken Polakowski, a student at the University of Istanbul who was there as a Fulbright scholar from the University of Michigan. Upon receiving a postgraduate scholarship, Prof. Artunç moved to the U.S. and had the opportunity to work with him again.
As a testament to his dedication to the industry, Prof. Artunç is a member of the International Federation of Landscape Architects. He has also been elected as a fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects and president of the Council of Educators in Landscape Architects. Beyond his professional affiliations, Prof. Artunç is a member of his local Rotary International.
Lauded for his superior reputation, Prof. Artunç has received two dozen Teaching Professional Awards from national and local organizations. He was also honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Turkish Society of Landscape Architecture and an Achievement Award from the Council of Educators in Landscape Architects. Prof. Artunç attributes much of his professional success to his family’s upbringing, his passion for the industry, and his love of the U.S.
Hoping to continue shaping and impacting future generations in landscape architecture, Prof. Artunç envisions continually mentoring his new and current students and witnessing them succeed. Besides his work in the U.S., Prof. Artunç intends to continue taking annual trips to Turkey, where he participates in workshops and seminars to continue giving back to his native land.
