William W. Holder, DBA, professor at the University of Southern California, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in higher education and accounting.

Dr. Holder, a tenured educator and expert in financial accounting, reporting and auditing, has been a faculty member at the University of Southern California, a leading private research institution in Los Angeles, since 1979. Beginning his career as an Ernst & Young professor of accounting, he spent over 20 years in his position. He then pivoted into administration, becoming the university’s dean and Alan Casden chair in accountancy on campus from 2001 to 2014. From there, Dr. Holder returned to the classroom, where he has since continued lecturing and mentoring students as they prepare for their futures in accounting.

Besides his academic success, Dr. Holder has garnered tremendous recognition in professional service, especially while serving on the Governmental Accounting Standards Board, which writes the rules for companies and governments that want to access capital markets.

Possessing a rich educational background, Dr. Holder holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting from the University of Oklahoma since 1967. Subsequently, he received both a master’s degree in accounting and a Doctor of Business Administration at the same institution in 1974.

Active in his professional community, Dr. Holder is a member of the American Accounting Association and the California Society of Certified Public Accountants. He has also been instrumental on the financial reporting executives committee of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).

Lauded for his contributions to community affairs, Dr. Holder has enjoyed giving back to various causes and initiatives. Among them, he has served on the board of directors and as the audit committee chair for the John Wayne Cancer Institute. He also served on the national board of directors for the Trauma Intervention Program. Moreover, Dr. Holder has been affiliated with the Police Action League.

As a seasoned researcher and scholar, Dr. Holder’s work has been disseminated in various scholarly journals, including the Journal of Accountancy, The Accounting Review, the Financial Executive and The CPA Journal.

During Dr. Holder’s tenure as the dean and Alan Casden chair in accountancy at the University of Southern California, he exceeded his goals by creating an outstanding and comprehensive accounting program. He was also credited with adding over 30 student scholarships and six endowed chairs and professorships, and successfully formed new joint and progressive degrees. Furthermore, Dr. Holder was able to uphold the school’s standing as a top 10 accounting program nationwide.

Dr. Holder has received numerous accolades throughout his distinguished career in higher education and accounting. He was twice named among the 100 Most Influential People in the Accounting Profession by Accounting Today and was named among the Top Five Professors by Texas Tech University. He also received a Faculty Excellence Award and a Distinguished Service Award and was named a Distinguished Scholar Alumnus by the California Society of Certified Public Accountants. Among other accolades, Dr. Holder was presented with a Gold Medal for Professional Service from the AICPA and was elected into the Accounting Hall of Fame by Oklahoma State University.

Dr. Holder’s contributions to the University of Southern California will leave a lasting impact on the many students, faculty, staff and alumni he has been in contact with, leaving a legacy that exemplifies authentic leadership. His aspirations include earning the endowed chair position at the University of Southern California before retiring and substantially growing the endowed scholarship he and his wife established.
