Julie K. Gates, MBA, instructor of forensic science at Southern Crescent Technical College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in education and law enforcement.

Ms. Gates has found tremendous success throughout her diverse career spanning decades. Having spent nearly 30 years in law enforcement, she served over 15 years as a dedicated crime scene investigator before retiring in 2017. Today, Ms. Gates has been enjoying tremendous success in the classroom as a forensic science instructor and program coordinator at Southern Crescent Technical College for over five years. The opportunity has enabled her to teach and mentor the next generation of law professionals and significantly impact the future of their careers.

In preparation for her future, Ms. Gates received an associate degree in business from Gordon College in 1988, a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice and police science from Mercer University in 1999 and a Master of Public Administration from Columbus State University in 2020. Besides her degrees, she holds credentials as a certified crime scene investigator by the State of Georgia and certification as a marijuana tester. Ms. Gates remains informed in her industry as a prominent member of the Georgia International Association for Identification, the International Association for Identification, the International Association for Identification and the Association for Crime Scene Reconstruction.

In light of her success, Southern Crescent Technical College honored Ms. Gates with the Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction in 2023. She was previously recognized four times by the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development and was recognized at an annual Georgia Master Teacher Conference. Ms. Gates’s extensive background in blood pattern analysis, fingerprint identification and processing, homicide, burglary suppression and sexual assault investigation have been pivotal to her success. Eager to continue making a difference in higher education, she intends to enhance Southern Crescent Technical College’s forensic science program and have it become recognized as one of the best in the state of Georgia. She also hopes to launch a virtual reality crime scene program in the United States and have Southern Crescent Technical College become the first school to implement it for training purposes.
