Jerome M. Shaw, PhD, Associate Professor Emeritus at the University of California Santa Cruz, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Professional for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Education.
Dr. Shaw is a distinguished educator whose career culminated in 2014 when he was named an associate professor emeritus at the University of California in Santa Cruz (UCSC). Having joined the institution in 2003 as an assistant professor, he later assumed the title of associate professor in 2010, where he remained until retirement. His dedication to fellow faculty and students was widely recognized.
During his tenure, Dr. Shaw taught various courses within the education department, division of social sciences, within the science education curriculum, and consulted on a project with colleagues at Northern Arizona University. Some of the courses he taught included Education 115: K-12 Student Assessment, Education 221: Science Teaching and Learning in Elementary Classrooms, and Education 287: Issues in Educational Assessment. Dr. Shaw’s tenure included extensive proficiency in science teaching and the learning and assessment of student learning in science, especially for culturally and linguistically diverse students.
Before pivoting into higher education, Dr. Shaw taught K-12 for the California Public School System. He taught science at the elementary and secondary levels in mainstream, bilingual (Spanish-English) classrooms and was involved in structured English immersion classrooms. Dr. Shaw spent over 30 years in the classroom setting. Besides teaching, he became a seasoned researcher, securing over 20 grants to fund his projects throughout his career.
Since retiring, Dr. Shaw has continued to engage in research studies, including a curriculum development project to test a new model and determine its potential effectiveness. If it proves promising, he plans to continue developing and implementing it. Moreover, Dr. Shaw has been working on several other projects with varied research elements and plans for upcoming studies.
Highly educated, Dr. Shaw completed all his studies at Stanford University in Stanford, California. He received a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and a Master of Education, culminating in a Doctor of Philosophy in science education in 1994. Highly qualified in his field, he holds lifetime California teaching credentials to teach high school biology, Spanish, social studies and various elementary subjects. Additionally, Dr. Shaw has a certificate of bilingual-bicultural competency.
Dr. Shaw is the president of the National Association for Research in Science Teaching. The organization notably recognized him with an Outstanding Dissertation Award in 1995 for his doctoral research. Active civically, Dr. Shaw has been serving as the president of NARST since 2024. Based in Minneapolis, the global professional organization has existed since 1928 and is dedicated to improving science teaching and learning through research. Dr. Shaw intends to remain active in his role until 2026 before pursuing other ventures.
Having accomplished so much throughout his career as a scholar, Dr. Shaw credits much of his success to his mother’s influence while coming of age. His mother was deeply committed to education and devoted her career to serving in the local public school system. Following in her footsteps, Dr. Shaw is grateful for his career choice.
Looking ahead to the next decade, Dr. Shaw seeks new endeavors focusing on nature. One of his anticipated undertakings will include revitalizing a previous project that he conducted while working toward his master’s degree at Stanford University. This project concerns a biological preserve on the university campus, where he researched a bird species on the brink of endangerment. Dr. Shaw is interested in conducting future studies on this species. Among other opportunities, Dr. Shaw is enthusiastic about studying the conservation of sea turtles in Hawaii.
