Kyle F. Kaalberg, PhD, executive director of strategy and strategic initiatives at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in higher education.
With over two and a half decades of experience, Dr. Kaalberg has built a successful career in education, specializing in educational leadership and higher education. He currently serves as the executive director of strategy and strategic initiatives at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, a role he has held since 2016. Prior to this, he served as special projects director from 2016 to 2018 and special assistant to the chief of staff from 2012 to 2016 at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. His earlier roles include course instructor and department liaison from 2010 to 2012 and teacher and team leader at Colegio Americano de Torreon from 2008 to 2009. His experience also includes working as a course instructor and graduate assistant at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas from 2007 to 2008. Before transitioning into higher education, he served as an instructional and curriculum coordinator for the Farmington R-VII School District from 2005 to 2007 and taught fifth grade at Farmington R-VII School from 2000 to 2005.
As the executive director of strategy and strategic initiatives, Dr. Kaalberg has played a pivotal role in transforming the university’s strategic vision into a more actionable, data-driven plan. Initially, the plan aimed to enhance areas like office environment, athletics, and student services, but lacked clear objectives and measurable metrics for tracking progress. He addressed this by breaking down the goals into defined objectives and metrics, shifting the university toward a more data-centric approach. Although there was initial resistance to data sharing and transparency, by 2018, he successfully established university-wide metrics and shared them at the departmental level, helping faculty and staff understand how their efforts contributed to overall success. This broader understanding fostered greater acceptance of the metrics over time, allowing departments to contextualize their data and performance.
Laying a strong educational foundation, Dr. Kaalberg earned a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education from the University of Iowa in 1999, a Master of Science in elementary education from Southwest Baptist University in 2003, and a PhD in curriculum and instruction, literacy, and educational leadership from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2014. In light of his impressive undertakings, he was awarded the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Graduate College Medallion in 2017. He is also an active member of several organizations, including Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Alumni Association, the International Reading Association, the Association of Teacher Educators, and the National Council of Teachers of English. He attributes his success to his dedication and commitment to fully immersing himself in his projects, emphasizing the importance of having a clear vision and a meticulous plan to achieve desired outcomes. In the coming years, he is focused on finding his “encore career,” one that allows him to be more present for his family while continuing to engage in professionally fulfilling work.
