Title: Department Head and Professor
Company: North Carolina State University
Location: Raleigh, North Carolina, United States

Chandra D. Cox, department head and professor at North Carolina State University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in higher education and the arts.

With nearly four and a half decades of experience, Ms. Cox has built a successful career in higher education, specializing in drawing, painting, design fundamentals, and digital media. She currently serves as department head and professor at North Carolina State University, a role she has held since 2007, and has been a professor in the College of Design at NC State since 1981. Her responsibilities include instructing introductory courses in media, arts, design, and technology, as well as fundamental drawing. In addition to her academic career, she is a public art sculptor, having designed artwork for two light rail stations in collaboration with Charlotte Arts In Transit, and is currently working on a commemorative piece for the City of Raleigh, honoring the historic Oberlin Village. She has traveled extensively for academic purposes, co-leading a biennial study abroad program in Ghana for 21 years, and played a key role in establishing NC State’s Prague Institute. Her creative works include illustrating “Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Black Boy” (2018) and “Christmas Makes Me Think” (2008).

Laying a solid educational foundation, Ms. Cox’s earned a Bachelor of Arts in art and art history from Hampton Institute, and a Master of Fine Arts from The Ohio State University. She takes great pride in leading the establishment of the Design Studies program, which has grown into a degree-granting department offering both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Under her leadership, the program expanded from a limited scope to become the largest undergraduate program in the college, focusing on theoretical and historical aspects of design as opposed to the traditional practice-based approach. In light of her impressive undertakings, she was honored with the Outstanding Teacher Award and the Undergraduate Alumni Distinguished Professor Award, both from North Carolina, as well as an artist-in-residence fellowship at the Headlands Center for the Arts. She accredits her accomplishments to her parents, who were her role models and instilled a deep-rooted commitment to teaching and service, as her family has a history spanning generations of educators and service providers. In the coming years, she plans to retire gradually, during which time she envisions dedicating more time to creative pursuits, particularly in public art, and exploring new avenues of expression.
