Dr. Cynthia M. Galloway, PhD, professor at Texas A&M University–Kingsville, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in higher education.
With over three and a half decades of experience, Dr. Galloway has excelled in academia and higher education. She has had an impressive tenure with Texas A&M University-Kingsville since 1994, currently serving as a professor since 2000. Prior to this, she was an associate professor of biology from 1994 to 2000 and an assistant professor of biology from 1990 to 1994. Before joining Texas A&M, she worked as an assistant professor at Winston-Salem State University from 1989 to 1990. Additionally, she served as a visiting assistant professor and consultant of molecular biology at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1994 and 1995. Her experience includes roles as a research associate and researcher with the Hawaiian Sugar Planters’ Association in 1988 and 1989. She has also contributed to various book chapters, foreign encyclopedias, and professional journal articles.
In addition to her primary vocation, Dr. Galloway has served as a STEM advisor at Holy Name Catholic Church since 2021 and is a member of the Church of Christ. She has also held notable positions such as president of the Southern Section of the American Society of Plant Physiology from 1995 to 1996 and maintains affiliations with the American Society of Plant Biologists, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Bryological and Lichenological Society, the Texas Academy of Science, Sigma Xi, and Phi Kappa Phi. Before embarking on her professional path, she pursued her education at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, earning a Bachelor of Science in botany in 1978, followed by a Master of Science in biology in 1980. She then earned a PhD in botany and plant sciences from the University of California, Riverside, in 1987 and completed post-doctoral work at the University of Georgia from 1986 to 1988. Furthering her expertise, she obtained ACUE-Credentialed Faculty certification from the Association of College and University Educators in 2023.
In light of her impressive undertakings, Dr. Galloway has accrued several accolades, including recognition for her field research in mosses, where she identified unreported mosses in increased distribution records, and her research in the physiology of mosses and their application tolerance. She was also presented with the Distinguished Service Award by the Southern Section of the American Society of Plant Physiologists in 2002. She attributes her success to the support she has received from Texas A&M University-Kingsville, the feedback from student evaluations, her perseverance, and her research and teaching capabilities. Currently working on a project to improve crop plants’ resilience during a drought, she hopes to develop an innovative application that will enable the transfer of genes from mosses to crop plants, which will enhance their ability to survive under harsh environmental conditions.
