Gerald C. Wood, PhD, Emeritus Professor at Carson-Newman University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in film, theater, and literature studies.

Having fostered a lifelong passion for literature and film, Dr. Wood currently holds the designation of emeritus professor of English and film studies from Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, Tennessee. Prior to receiving this honor, he excelled for over 40 years as a professor of English and film studies at the aforementioned university, during which time he was a critical figure in the development of Carson-Newman’s film program. As a testament to his exceptional contributions over the course of his tenure in academia, Dr. Wood was recognized as a Distinguished Professor by Carson-Newman University.

To support his professional ambitions, Dr. Wood initially completed a combined undergraduate program focusing on American studies and film at the University of Iowa. He subsequently continued his academic efforts with a bachelor’s degree at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana. He eventually concluded his formal higher education at the University of Florida in 1971, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy. During this time, Dr. Wood would pen his lauded dissertation, “19th Century British Literature with Emphasis on the Writings of Lord Byron, Don Juan Satiric Poem.”

Beyond his primary responsibilities, Dr. Wood has participated in a number of endeavors outside of his immediate circles. In 1999, he was active as a summer fellow at Columbia University. He was additionally appointed as a visiting scholar at the University of Ohio. Moreover, he has contributed to his community through his affiliations with the Vanderbilt Hospital, the World Wildlife Federation, and the Smithsonian Institute. Dr. Wood has likewise maintained his involvement with multiple organizations within his areas of expertise, including the Modern Language Association, the South Atlantic Modern Language Association, the Society for American Baseball Research, the Popular Culture Association, and The Byron Society.

Renowned among his peers as an expert in 19th-century British literature as well as film and theater studies, Dr. Wood has found much success with his creative works. As an author, he has written such books as “Horton Foote: A Casebook,” part of the “Casebooks on Modern Dramatists” series, in 1997, “Horton Foote and the Theater of Intimacy” for Louisiana State University Press in 1999, “Conor McPherson: Imagining Mischief” in 2003, “Northsiders: Essays on the History and Culture of the Chicago Cubs” in 2008, and “Smoky Joe Wood: The Biography of a Baseball Legend” in 2015. As an editor, he notably edited a book on playwright and filmmaker Neil LaBute. As a screenwriter, he has authored the script “Intimacies” in addition to a screenplay adaptation of an Appalachian novel titled “Newfound.” Dr. Wood also appeared in the documentary film “Horton Foote: The Road to Home.”

Dr. Wood has attributed his success to his outstanding ability to evolve, having shifted his focus from studying literature and film to becoming a literary figure and screenwriter in his own right. As a result of the acclaim he received for his biography of Smoky Joe Wood, he was presented with the Seymour Medal from the Society for American Baseball Research in 2014. In addition to this achievement, he is incredibly proud of the publication of “Horton Foote and the Theater of Intimacy,” which highlights the life and work of the screenwriter of “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Looking toward the future, Dr. Wood plans on continuing his career as a screenwriter and eventually shepherding his screenplays into productions for the screen.
