Prior to her current positions, she was active as a tenured professor of social work at Coker College, now Coker University, from 1990 to 2021. Alongside her teaching duties, she served as chair and director of the social work department at Coker College from 2000 to 2018. She began her career as a program director at the South Carolina Department of Social Services and subsequently held positions with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.
Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. McClerklin-Motley pursued an education at various institutions, culminating in her PhD in human services with a cognate in social and community services from Capella University in 2018. Prior to this, she obtained a Master of Social Work from the University of South Carolina in 1992, followed by a bachelor’s degree in social work, magna cum laude, from Benedict College. She engaged in specialized coursework in engineering, aerospace manufacturing, business, and computing at multiple institutions. She also diversified her professional portfolio, serving as a consultant, compliance officer, and adjunct professor. She also contributed as a live and recorded web-based trainer for the South Carolina Foster Parent Association. Beyond her primary vocation, she remains actively involved in professional associations such as the National Association of Social Workers, the Council on Social Work Education, and the National Association of Professional Women.
In light of her impressive undertakings, Dr. McClerklin-Motley was recognized as the Social Work Educator of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers South Carolina Chapter in 2016 and received the Director’s Community Leadership Award from the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 2015. She was also presented with the Master Professor Award at Coker College and has been featured as a top professional in the Wall Street Journal. In the coming years, she aims to continue her contributions to academia and community service, aspiring to further innovate in areas such as education, professional writing, and podcasting, while remaining dedicated to addressing emerging challenges in social work and advocating for teen reproductive health. Her advice to aspiring professionals is to remain steadfast in their pursuit of knowledge, embrace opportunities for growth, and leverage their expertise to make a meaningful impact in their respective fields.
