Dr. Taub’s illustrious career in biochemistry and molecular biology spans over four decades, marked by her dedicated service as a professor at the University at Buffalo since 1979. Specializing in cultured kidney cells, hormones, growth factors, cancer, molecular biology, genetics, and stem cells, she has been a stalwart educator, offering courses in cell signaling in health and disease, as well as advanced biochemistry and cell biology. Her academic journey commenced with a Bachelor of Arts in biology from the University of California, San Diego. Advancing her studies, she earned a Master of Arts in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 1974, followed by a PhD in the same field from the University of California in 1976. As a post-doctoral fellow at UC San Diego, she laid the foundation for her impactful career.
Dr. Taub’s groundbreaking work as a post-doctoral researcher in the development of serum-free medium for cultured kidney cells stands as a highlight in her career. This breakthrough facilitated the growth of primary cultures of normal kidney cells, allowing her to explore growth factors affecting both normal and tumorigenic cells. Her expertise in serum-free medium has also been crucial in stem cell research. Throughout her career, Dr. Taub’s contributions include over 100 publications in professional journals and authoring chapters for a book on tissue culture of epithelial cells. Recognitions include a certificate of publication for the top downloaded paper in 2019 from the International Journal of Molecular Sciences and an NIH Research Career Development Award. She has also secured 32 research grant awards from the National Institute of Health and private foundations.
A distinguished member of professional organizations such as the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the American Society for Cell Biology, and the American Association for Cancer Research, Dr. Taub attributes her success to her colleagues, mentors, faculties, students, and the supportive research environment at her university. Looking forward, She envisions a future marked by prolific publications and research in new areas of medical diseases affecting kidney cells, including kidney cancers emerging as a consequence of oncometabolites. She remains committed to exploring novel research avenues within her expertise, continuing her work on induced pluripotent stem cells, and, at the same time, developing a new course on inherited diseases.
