Harvey Abramowitz, Eng ScD, a retired professor at Purdue University Northwest, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of mechanical and civil engineering.

Dr. Abramowitz enjoyed a fulfilling career in mechanical and civil engineering that spanned more than four decades, culminating in his role as a professor at Purdue University Northwest between 2016 and his retirement in 2022. In this role, his area of research centered on extractive metallurgy mineral engineering, waste management and metallography. Proud to have shepherded numerous young students on their way to graduation and future success, Dr. Abramowitz previously served in numerous roles throughout academia, including many years spent as a professor at Purdue University Calumet, a visiting professor at Northwestern University, an adjunct professor at the University of Missouri, and a research assistant at Columbia University, beginning in 1979. 

Outside of his primary endeavors as an educator, Dr. Abramowitz has also served in the private sector as the president of A2Z Consultants Inc. since 1985, having previously availed himself as a research engineer at the Inland Steel Company from 1980 to 1985. Additionally, to remain aware of developments in the field, he has maintained his affiliation with such organizations as the Association for Iron and Steel Technology (AIST), the Materials Society, the American Society for Metals, and the American Society for Engineering Education. 

Having long felt drawn to the engineering profession, Dr. Abramowitz found himself attracted to materials science and environmental issues while coming up through college. After earning a Bachelor of Science at Columbia University in 1972, he proceeded to attain a Master of Science in extractive metallurgy and mineral engineering in 1975 and a Doctor of Engineering Science in 1983. Well-regarded for his scholarly rigor, he has contributed to a number of articles that have appeared in such publications as Iron & Steel Technology, as well as the proceedings of numerous AIST conferences throughout the years. He also holds two patents in synthetic fuel production. 

Attributing his success to the whole of his educational journey, as well as the influence of several mentors, Dr. Abramowitz is most proud to have earned several distinguished accolades, including an Outstanding Teacher Award in 2011 and an Outstanding Faculty Service Award in 2009. He was a recognized as an AIST Grant Professor in 2004, and as a grant professor of the ISS Foundation between 2002 and 2004. Looking ahead, he aspires to complete his research into a number of fascinating subjects, such as the 3D visualization of ternary phase diagrams, and begin writing grants to help secure scholarship funds for future students.
