Donald B. Peck, Retired Director of the Center for Elementary Science at Fairleigh Dickinson University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in science education.
Now retired, Mr. Peck led an accomplished career as a science educator and academic administrator. From 1987 to 1996, he served Fairleigh Dickinson University as the director of the institution’s Center for Elementary Science. From 1974 to 1985, he was a supervisor for science curriculum and instruction at the Woodbridge Township School District. Mr. Peck began his career as a teacher of chemistry and physics at Litchfield High School in Connecticut in 1953, after which he taught chemistry and geology at the University of Connecticut. In 1964, he was the director of science curriculum and instruction at the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Public Schools.
In preparation for his career in education, Mr. Peck attended Bates College and earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1953. In 1960, he graduated from Union College with a Master of Science in science teaching. Mr. Peck concluded his higher education at the University of Maryland, where he completed all coursework but his dissertation toward a Doctor of Philosophy in 1971. Throughout his career, he contributed his knowledge through published works, including authoring editions of “Mineral Identification: A Practical Guide for the Amateur Mineralogist” in 2007 and 2016. Mr. Peck co-authored numerous science textbooks and wrote a series of elementary science books. For his professional excellence, he received a fellowship from the National Science Foundation and earned a trip to Argonne National Laboratory. He is a member of the Mineralogical Society of America and a life member of the National Science Teachers Association.
