John H. Perepezko, PhD, IBM-Bascom Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in material sciences, engineering and higher education.
A celebrated figure in the realms of engineering and higher education, Dr. Perepezko has accrued more than 40 years of professional excellence in his areas of expertise. Currently an IBM-Bascom professor of material sciences and engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a role he has held since 2001, he climbed the ranks of success in his earlier years as an assistant professor, associate professor, and full professor from 1975 to 2001. Alongside his roles at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he served overseas as an adjunct professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tohoku University, and the Beijing University of Technology.
To prepare for his esteemed positions, Dr. Perepezko sought a formal education, first obtaining a Bachelor of Science in 1967 and a Master of Science in 1968 in metallurgical engineering at the Polytechnic Institute of New York, now known as NYU Tandon. He followed these accomplishments with a Doctor of Philosophy in metallurgy and materials science at the Carnegie-Mellon University in 1973, and he served as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same academic institute in 1973 and 1974.
A prolific author in his field, Dr. Perepezko has contributed more than 400 publications in his field and has served as an author, coauthor, and editor for several articles in peer-reviewed journals. The author of “The Hotter the Engine, the Better” in 2009, he has also coauthored numerous publications alongside other educators, including “Surface Engineering of Mo-Base Alloys for Elevated Temperature Environmental Resistance” in the Annual Review of Materials Resistance in 2015, “Arc Jet Testing and Evaluation of Mo-Si-B Coated Mo and SiC-ZrB2 Ceramics” in the Journal of the European Ceramic Society in 2014, and “Oxidation Resistant Coatings for Refractory Metal Cermets” in Surface and Coatings Technology in 2012. He has also been an associate editor for Acta Materialia and Scripta Materialia from 1999 2001.
The holder of 12 patents on solidification and high temperature materials, Dr. Perepezko maintains affiliations with several industry-related organizations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Academy of Engineering, the Electrochemical Society, the American Ceramic Society, and the American Society for Engineering Education. He has further been deemed a fellow of ASM International, the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society, and the Materials Research Society.
In recognition of his exceptional accomplishments, Dr. Perepezko has been awarded several accolades throughout his career. The recipient of a Gold Medal from ASM International in 2017, he has been presented with the Fellow Award from the Materials Research Society in 2013, the William Hume-Rothery Award from the Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society in 2009, the Visiting Research Award from Japan Society for the Promotion of Science in 2005, and the Senior Research Award from the International Symposium on Metastable, Amorphous, and Nanostructured Materials in 2004. He has been listed in several editions of Who’s Who publications, including Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in Science and Engineering. He was awarded the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.
Attributing his success to his PhD advisor at Carnegie-Mellon University, Prof. Massalski, as well as colleagues from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Carl Looper and Dr. William Boettinger, Dr. Perepezko found intrigue in his field from a young age, becoming the first individual in his family to earn a college degree. However, the highlights of his career were being elected to the National Academy of Engineering and witnessing his students rise to high positions in the industry, becoming presidents and vice presidents of companies and directors of laboratories. Married to Kathleen Leavy, Dr. Perepezko is the proud father of three daughters: Elizabeth, Ann and Kate.
