Stephanie J. Bird, Science and Engineering Ethics Education and Policy Consultant, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership for women in science.
As a former visiting scholar and special assistant to the provost of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and current, founding co-editor-in-chief of Science & Engineering Ethics, Dr. Bird has been an independent consultant in the scientific field since 2003. She is a fellow of the Association for Women in Science and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, as well as a former fellow of the Mellon Foundation at MIT. Dr. Bird is well known for her work in neuroscience, neuroethics, and research ethics, and has appeared in six volumes of Who’s Who in America.
An alumna of the University of California, Los Angeles, Dr. Bird earned a MS and a MPhil from Yale University, ultimately completing a PhD from Yale in 1975. She was initially a staff scientist of the Neurosciences Research Program before entering MIT as a lecturer, research affiliate, and visiting scholar. Dr. Bird has been honored with 1984 to 1986 Professional Development Awards from the National Science Foundation, and chaired the social issues committee of the Society for Neuroscience from 2002 to 2005. She was appointed secretary of the Societal Impacts of Science and Engineering Section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1996, and is scheduled to serve through 2019.
Dr. Bird is a former president of the Association for Women in Science, and belongs to the International Neuroethics Society, the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics, and Sigma Xi, the scientific research honor society. Her name graces the bylines of numerous articles and book chapters on neuroscience, neuroethics, and research ethics. Dr. Bird has also found a partner for her life in science, Lawrence W. Shannon, whom she married in 1976.
