A defining chapter in Mr. Fager’s professional journey occurred between 1979 and 1981 when he served as an investigative reporter and producer for ABC News’ 20/20 program. His most notable achievement came in 1981 with the Emmy Award for Outstanding Program Achievement in News and Documentary for “Formula for Disaster.” This investigation exposed critical gaps in the regulation of infant formula in the United States. Through rigorous reporting, Mr. Fager revealed that manufacturers were not meeting regulatory standards despite their claims. The story documented severe health consequences suffered by children due to missing ingredients in formula products, including one young girl who was profoundly affected. The impact of this work led directly to mandatory regulatory changes in infant formula production nationwide, exemplifying Mr. Fager’s ability to drive meaningful reform through journalism.

Mr. Fager’s academic background laid a solid foundation for his varied accomplishments. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in American studies from Yale University in 1966 before pursuing a Doctor of Jurisprudence in public policy from the School of Law at New York University, graduating in 1971. The decision to attend law school was influenced by the opportunity for hands-on internships alongside academic coursework, an approach that shaped his practical orientation toward problem-solving throughout his career.

Adding to his credentials, Mr. Fager’s membership in both the Teachers Union and Writers Guild underscores his standing among peers and his ongoing commitment to professional excellence. Mr. Fager began volunteering with NYC VISTA in 1965 and continues to support its mission, focused on education and youth engagement.
