Before her tenure with Montana State Special Education, Ms. Nelson served as a teacher within the Fromberg School District in Fromberg, Montana, for several years. Ms. Nelson’s professional journey spanned over two decades, during which she became an expert in the field of special education. Her achievements reflect not only her technical proficiency but also her deep-seated passion for supporting children as they strive to reach their full potential.

In preparation for her future, Ms. Nelson’s academic foundation was laid at the University of Oregon in Eugene, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in elementary education in 1976. This degree provided the essential knowledge and pedagogical skills that underpinned her subsequent accomplishments in the classroom. To further enhance her qualifications, Ms. Nelson obtained a special education certification for preschool-aged children as well as a special education certification for kindergarten through 12th grade. These credentials enabled her to address the unique challenges faced by students across a broad age range and contributed significantly to her effectiveness as an educator.

Beyond her career, Ms. Nelson has maintained active involvement with civic-minded organizations. She supports the Presbyterian Church and contributes to charitable initiatives such as the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Compassion International. Ms. Nelson has also extended personal support through donations to a child from the Philippines, reflecting her ongoing commitment to philanthropy.

Ms. Nelson attributes much of her success to the influence of her mother, whose resilience and determination left a lasting impression on both her and her sister. Her mother’s ability to balance single parenthood with demanding roles at the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Safety Department instilled in Ms. Nelson the values of perseverance and commitment. The example set by her mother’s kindness and willingness to help others also shaped Ms. Nelson’s approach to teaching and reinforced her desire to make a positive impact on children’s lives. Additionally, Ms. Nelson credits her own steadfastness and dedication to keeping promises as key factors in her professional achievements.

Born in Billings, Ms. Nelson enjoys traveling with her husband, with whom she has shared more than 20 years of marriage. She resides in a small rural agricultural community surrounded by farmers and looks forward to volunteering in the future, potentially at her former school or within her local community. Ms. Nelson’s legacy is defined by her unwavering dedication to helping children succeed and her enduring commitment to service both inside and outside the classroom.
