Mr. Munoz has established a distinguished career in school administration and leadership, marked by more than two decades of dedicated service in education and public service. Since 2022, he has served as a school administrator with Chesapeake Public Schools in Chesapeake, Virginia. In this capacity, Mr. Munoz has demonstrated a commitment to fostering student achievement and supporting the professional growth of educators. He regards his current role as his most notable accomplishment, taking pride in guiding students toward discovering their paths and achieving success.
Before transitioning into his current position, Mr. Munoz served as the principal of Eugenio Maria de Hostos Charter School in Rochester, New York, from 2019 to 2022. During his tenure, he led initiatives to enhance academic performance and cultivate a positive school culture. Mr. Munoz’s leadership was instrumental in implementing programs that supported both student development and faculty collaboration.
Leveraging his previous tenure as an assistant principal, Mr. Munoz excelled at Landstown High School within the Virginia Beach City Public Schools system, starting in 2016. He played a key role in various administrative operations, student discipline and curriculum planning. Mr. Munoz served in the same capacity at Lynnhaven Middle School, also part of Virginia Beach City Public Schools, during the preceding school year, from 2015 to 2016.
Mr. Munoz’s tenure with Virginia Beach City Public Schools dates to 2004, when he taught Spanish from 2002 to 2004, inspiring students through language instruction and cultural enrichment. He also worked as a school improvement specialist for the district from 2009 to 2012, where he was responsible for developing and executing plans aimed at raising academic standards across multiple campuses. Between those years, Mr. Munoz was an adjunct professor at Virginia Wesleyan University. He provided instruction in higher education while simultaneously serving as an administrative intern and assistant with Virginia Beach City Public Schools from 2012 to 2015. Mr. Munoz began his career in education in 2002 as a Spanish teacher with Portsmouth Public Schools.
Before pivoting into education, Mr. Munoz was a probation officer for the City of Chesapeake’s Sheriff’s Office for two years, starting in 2000. His career is also distinguished by his military service, during which he served as a petty officer third class in the U.S. Navy from 1995 to 1999. This formative experience instilled discipline and a strong sense of duty that have informed his subsequent work in education.
Mr. Munoz’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice and Spanish from Virginia Wesleyan University, completed in 2001, and a Master of Arts in education and human development from The George Washington University, earned in 2012. Beyond his education, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to professional engagement, actively involved in organizations such as EL Education, the International Alliance for Invitational Education and the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals, reflecting his dedication to ongoing professional development and collaboration within the field.
Throughout his career, Mr. Munoz has been recognized for his contributions and leadership. He was named a finalist for the Teacher of the Year Award by Virginia Beach City Public Schools in 2006 and received the Hispanic Heroes Award in 2016. He attributes much of his success to the influence of his family, especially his mother, who raised four children as a single parent while pursuing a master’s degree and building her career as a teacher.
Eager for the future, Mr. Munoz aims to continue advancing professionally within educational leadership while maintaining direct involvement with students and teachers in the community. He remains committed to providing immediate support for students and families while seeking new opportunities for growth within the field of education.
