Ms. Buchanan’s extensive background and dedication to fostering foundational reading skills have made her a valued leader within the school community.

Before her current position, Ms. Buchanan was an assistant principal with the New York City Department of Education from 2013 to 2017. This promotion marked a significant milestone in her career, as she was elevated from within the same school where she had previously worked as an educator. She takes pride in this achievement, viewing it as a testament to her leadership abilities and her impact on both students and colleagues. In this capacity, Ms. Buchanan played a pivotal role in curriculum development, teacher mentorship and the implementation of educational initiatives designed to improve student outcomes.

Between 1996 and 2017, Ms. Buchanan was a teacher with the New York City Department of Education. During this period, she refined her instructional skills and developed a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by students in urban settings. Ms. Buchanan’s passion for helping children and her love of reading were evident in her classroom practices, where she consistently sought to inspire students to reach their full potential.

Ms. Buchanan’s academic credentials include a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and teaching from Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, which was awarded in 1991. She later received a master’s degree in reading teacher education from Brooklyn College in Brooklyn, New York, in 2000 and a Master of Education in educational administration from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona, in 2006. Ms. Buchanan credits her success in the field to a mindset of continuous learning, emphasizing that growth is essential in the field of education. Whether through workshops, additional coursework or advanced certification, she has remained committed to professional development as a foundation for effective teaching and leadership.

Dedicated to various initiatives beyond the classroom, Ms. Buchanan is actively involved in civic organizations and community service initiatives. She volunteers her time to different causes and is affiliated with the National Council of Negro Women, reflecting her commitment to empowering others and promoting positive change.

Ms. Buchanan’s expertise in common core state standards, early childhood and elementary education, educational management and classroom management has all contributed to her success and leadership capabilities in the academic sector. Looking ahead, she is considering returning to school to pursue a doctorate. She remains dedicated to working in lower-income neighborhoods as a way of giving back to the community that shaped her early life. Having previously worked with many at-risk children in the neighborhood where she grew up, Ms. Buchanan is motivated by a desire to inspire young people and help them realize their full potential for success.
