Michele Levy, professor emerita at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in English and literature education.

Dr. Levy dedicated more than 40 years to an esteemed career, culminating in her current status as a professor emerita at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University since 2017. Her journey to this point began in her childhood, when she was obsessed with reading from a young age. At just 7 years old, Dr. Levy had become a regular visitor to her local library, reading books at an adult level. She also had a strong passion for language, studying Latin, Spanish and French in high school, with the addition of Russian in her college years.

Prior to retiring in 2015, Dr. Levy served as an English professor at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University for over 10 years, including several years as chair of the English department. She was affiliated with Xavier University of Louisiana for 20 years, both as faculty and chair of the English department. Dr. Levy also contributed as a civics instructor at Isidore Newman School, an English instructor at Dominican College and an academic adviser at Newcomb-Tulane College. Her first professional experiences were at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she took on roles as a teaching assistant in comparative literature and English while pursuing her own education.

Before attending that institution, Dr. Levy started her academic journey with coursework at Bryn Mawr College in the 1960s and a Bachelor of Arts in history at The George Washington University, where she graduated with honors in 1970. She shifted to The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, obtaining a Master of Arts in comparative literature in 1973. Subsequently, Dr. Levy earned a PhD in comparative literature from the same institution in 1980. She has remained associated with The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill postretirement, participating as a professor in the university’s free shared learning program for adults since 2022.

Known for her scholarly output, Dr. Levy is proud to be in the top 4% of citations on Academia, a database of scholarly papers across dozens of subjects. Her research topics have included economic literature from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, postcolonial studies, Slavic studies, and Balkan history and literature. Dr. Levy continues to write reviews of Balkan literature for World Literature Today.

In addition to her scholarly work, Dr. Levy has embraced writing fiction. Her first novel, “Anna’s Dance,” was published in 2020. Drawing on Dr. Levy’s academic interests, the book tells a semi-autobiographical story that weaves in the complex history of Macedonia. She feels a deep connection to this region and has gained great fulfilment from exploring its history and culture both in her own writing and through other literature. In recognition of her expertise in this area, Dr. Levy was invited by the Serbian government to attend a literary festival in Belgrade.

Beyond her accomplishments as a professor, Dr. Levy is a devoted wife, a loving mother to three and a grandmother to seven. She has filled her retirement with such hobbies as reading, writing, Balkan dancing and walking. Dr. Levy enjoys traveling to new locations with her husband, allowing her to practice her language skills and learn more about these regions. She is currently in the process of writing her second novel.
