Mr. Masson has established a distinguished career in athletics, marked by his current role as the head coach of the girls’ varsity basketball team at Carson High School in Carson  California. Since 2022, he has been dedicated to coaching and overseeing the junior varsity program, with a focus on developing athletes both on and off the court. Mr. Masson’s expertise in coaching is evident through his impressive record of over 700 career wins and his ability to lead teams to significant achievements, including a California state championship during his tenure at Rolling Hills Preparatory School between 2014 and 2020.

Having initially maintained a long-standing tenure at Carson High School from 1982 to 2006, Mr. Masson held multiple positions, including athletic director, physical education teacher, head coach of boys’ basketball and dean of students. While serving as the head coach of the girls’ varsity basketball team at Rolling Hills Preparatory School, he guided the team to three consecutive state finals, showcasing his strategic acumen and leadership skills. Mr. Masson also excelled as an assistant coach for the girls’ varsity basketball team at North High School, part of the Torrance Unified School District, between 2012 and 2014.

Mr. Masson’s career began with foundational experiences as an assistant coach in football, basketball and baseball at John C. Fremont High School from 1972 to 1975. It was here that he had the privilege of coaching future professional athletes, such as Ricky Bell and Chet Lemon. Additionally, Mr. Masson was influential in his roles as an assistant football coach at Los Angeles Southwest College and as a football defensive coordinator.

In addition to his coaching roles, Mr. Masson has made significant contributions to athletic administration. He served as athletic league commissioner for the Los Angeles Unified School District from 2006 to 2012 and held various other leadership positions, such as head boys’ varsity basketball coach for over 20 years and athletic director for a decade.

Mr. Masson’s educational background laid a strong foundation for his career achievements. He earned a Bachelor of Science in physical education with a minor in biology from the University of New Hampshire in 1970. He then completed studies in health and physical education at the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1972, before earning a Master of Arts in professional leadership and physical education from Brigham Young University in 1980. These academic pursuits have equipped Mr. Masson with the knowledge and skills necessary for his impactful career.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Mr. Masson is actively involved in civic organizations, such as Meals on Wheels, and serves on various committees related to interscholastic athletics. His dedication to community service is further exemplified by his roles on several playoff seeding committees and as the chair of the IAC Officials Subcommittee.

Mr. Masson’s commitment to excellence in athletics has been recognized with numerous accolades, including being named Athletic Director of the Year by the LA City Section from 2008 to 2009 and being inducted into the Bishop Bradley High School Hall of Fame. Looking ahead, he remains committed to making a positive impact on young athletes. Whether through coaching or volunteering, he aims to continue fostering growth and development among those he mentors. Mr. Masson’s legacy is reflected not only in his personal achievements but also in the success of many former athletes who have gone on to become coaches themselves worldwide.
