Dr. Fredrickson’s illustrious career in education and technology is marked by a series of significant roles and contributions. Currently, he holds the esteemed title of professor emeritus at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, a position he has held since 2020. Having taught on campus for nearly 30 years, Dr. Fredrickson began his academic tenure in 1992, where he was instrumental in shaping the future of teacher education through his innovative approach to online learning. His dedication to the field was recognized upon his retirement when a room was dedicated in his honor, celebrating his legacy as the founder of Teacher Education Online.
Before his tenure at the University of Nebraska Kearney, Dr. Fredrickson was an assistant professor at the University of Alaska Southeast in Sitka from 1989 to 1992. Pivoting into higher education, his academic journey began in Lubbock, Texas, where he taught at the Lubbock Independent School District between 1981 and 1989.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Fredrickson’s professional experiences included serving as a deputy sheriff with the Lubbock Sheriff’s Department from 1979 to 1982. He also garnered expertise working in the identification division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C., between 1969 and 1970.
Dr. Fredrickson’s military service is a testament to his commitment, discipline and career in law enforcement. He served as an aircraft mechanic in the U.S. Air Force from 1970 to 1974 and as a military police officer in the U.S. Army between 1975 and 1979. This background also laid a strong foundation for Dr. Fredrickson’s later achievements in academia and technology.
In preparation for his future, Dr. Fredrickson became highly educated. His journey began with a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1976, followed by a Master of Education in 1983 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1989 from Texas Tech University. Dr. Fredrickson’s additional qualifications in technology further underscore his expertise, including certifications in computer science, instructional technology and information technology. Moreover, he holds credentials in the broad field of social studies, as well as Texas history and government.
Dr. Fredrickson’s professional affiliations reflect his commitment to advancing educational technology. He is a member of several industry-related organizations, including the International Society for Technology in Education, the Society for Technology and Teacher Education and the Nebraska Educational Technology Association. Civically, Dr. Fredrickson remains active with the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars as a life member. Alongside his wife, he also engages in turtle conservation efforts in Florida, a cause they find deeply rewarding.
Extending beyond teaching, Dr. Fredrickson is an accomplished researcher and author with numerous publications to his name. He has delivered over 50 international and national presentations and contributed to more than 20 peer-reviewed publications, as well as over a dozen textbooks. Additionally, Dr. Fredrickson has secured multiple grants at the state, national and international levels.
Throughout his career and personal endeavors, Dr. Fredrickson has demonstrated unwavering dedication to education and service. These qualities have earned him recognition as Professor of the Year and have left an indelible mark on those around him.
