With 25 years of experience to his credit, Dr. de Lima has established himself as a distinguished figure in the field of hematology and oncology. He has excelled as a professor of medicine and the director of the stem cell transplant and cellular therapy program at The Ohio State University since 2021. In these posts, Dr. de Lima oversees approximately 500 procedures annually, encompassing both investigational treatments and standard care for leukemia. His expertise in donor stem cell transplants for acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) has significantly contributed to advancements in the treatment of adult leukemia.
Prior to his current position, Dr. de Lima served as the chief of the division of hematology and oncology at University Hospitals and Case Western Reserve University from 2019 to 2021. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in developing programs that expanded access to cellular therapies, aiming to treat more patients and improve success rates. His efforts in point-of-care manufacturing of genetically modified cells have made CAR T-cell therapy more accessible and cost-effective.
From 2012 to 2021, Dr. de Lima found success in a number of roles at Case Western Reserve University, including director of the stem cell transplant and hematologic malignancies program and professor of medicine. His leadership was instrumental in establishing innovative programs that focused on cellular therapy. Before his time at Case Western Reserve University, he was active as a professor of medicine at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center from 2000 to 2012, where he honed his skills in treating blood cancers.
Dr. de Lima’s career began as a general practitioner at Santa Casa Hospital, followed by roles as chief medical officer at Kurea and Rora Biologics. His dedication to treating blood cancers in the United States was deeply influenced by his family’s legacy as third-generation physicians as well as personal experiences with cancer within his family.
In addition to his professional achievements, Dr. de Lima is actively involved in several industry-related organizations, including the American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy, the Brazilian Society of Transplantation, and the American Society of Hematology. His commitment to civic-minded organizations is evident through his volunteer work with the Pelotonia Institute for Immuno Oncology at The Ohio State University and Cyto-Hematology, as well as his fundraising efforts for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.
Dr. de Lima’s contributions have been recognized with numerous accolades, including the Public Service Award from the American Society of Transplant and Cell Therapy, the William Greenville Pace III Endowed Chair in Cancer Research from The Ohio State University College of Medicine, and the Medal of Inconfidencia. He attributes his success to persistence and attentiveness to trends in his field, emphasizing the importance of connectivity and collaboration in academia.
Looking toward the future, Dr. de Lima aims to continue expanding novel therapies to reach more individuals in need while training the next generation in these therapies. His involvement with two startups further enhances his visibility and ability to achieve these goals. Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. de Lima enjoys reading and running, activities that provide balance to his dedicated career.
