Gokhan Gelisen, professor of civil engineering at Bahcesehir University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements and leadership in project management.
A distinguished figure in the field of civil engineering, Dr. Gelisen has dedicated his career to advancing the discipline through both academia and industry. As a professor in the civil engineering department at Bahcesehir University since 2016, he has been instrumental in shaping the minds of future engineers. His passion for teaching is evident in his commitment to his students, whom he guides in project management, construction management, and transportation courses. Dr. Gelisen’s influence extends beyond the classroom as he travels extensively, offering freelance consultancy to prestigious organizations such as Aeroports de Paris, Dogus Group, Hydrostroy AD, and Efficio Consulting.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Gelisen excelled as a cost manager at Skanska from 2007 to 2015, where he honed his expertise in managing large-scale construction projects. Concurrently, he held multiple positions at FTAA, including vice president of academic affairs from 2006 to 2007 and vice president of technology from 2012 to 2015. His earlier career includes working as a senior structural engineer at Parsons Brinckerhoff from 2001 to 2005 and a senior project controls engineer at Washington Group International from 2005 to 2007. These posts allowed him to refine his skills while contributing to numerous mega construction projects worldwide, including the Riyadh Metro Project and the Abu Dhabi International Airport Main Terminal Building.
Before embarking upon his professional path, Dr. Gelisen pursued an education at Istanbul Technical University, from which he earned a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering in 1996. Soon thereafter, he obtained a second Bachelor of Science in civil engineering at Middle East Technical University in 1999. He continued his studies with advanced degrees such as a Master of Science in structural engineering at Lehigh University in 2001 and a Master of Science in computer science at Columbia University in 2006. Dr. Gelisen ultimately concluded his academic efforts at New York University in 2010, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in construction management.
In addition to his academic credentials, Dr. Gelisen holds several certifications that underscore his expertise and commitment to safety and sustainability. He has acquired his license to practice as a professional engineer in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Moreover, Dr. Gelisen holds certifications such as LEED Accredited Professional, Project Management Professional from the Project Management Institute Inc., HAZWOPER Certification from New Environment Inc., OSHA Certification from the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and Certified Supported Scaffold User from New York City College of Technology.
Dr. Gelisen’s endeavors extend beyond his professional activities into civic engagement and scholarly publications. In addition to volunteering with Shriners International and The Grotto, he serves as a mentor to aspiring engineers. His scholarly work further includes co-authoring “Expectations of Headquarters Employees from ERP Systems in the Turkish Construction Sector,” published in The European Journal of Research and Development, and authoring “The Rise of Sustainable and Smart Cities in the UAE: The Experiences for Turkiye,” which was featured in the International Journal of Arts Humanities and Management Studies.
Dr. Gelisen remains engaged with the latest advancements in his industry through his membership with organizations such as the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Fritz Engineering Research Society, the Project Management Institute Inc., the Rotary Club of New York, The Engineers’ Club of New Jersey, the Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering International, and Chaine des Rotisseurs. He was likewise appointed as president of the Society of Turkish American Architects, Engineers, and Scientists Inc.
Outside his professional life, Dr. Gelisen enjoys golfing, traveling, playing tennis, and reading. He is also committed to fostering sustainable practices within the construction industry with aspirations to contribute significantly to green building initiatives aimed at achieving zero carbon emissions. In the coming years, Dr. Gelisen hopes that his dedication to both personal growth and professional excellence continues to inspire those around him.
