Hae Won Shin, MD, professor and chair of the department of neurology at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in health care.
Dr. Shin has established herself as a distinguished figure in neurology, with a particular focus on epilepsy and translational neuromodulation. Her career is marked by significant contributions to patient care, education and research. Since 2024, Dr. Shin has served as a professor and chair of the department of neurology at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s College of Medicine. In this role, she oversees clinical practices, mentors faculty members and educates medical and neurology students. She also manages three fellowship programs in vascular neurology, neurocritical care and clinical neurophysiology while conducting research and providing patient care. Moreover, Dr. Shin has been involved with Baptist Hospital, Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare and Regional One Health through The University of Tennessee Health Science Center since 2024.
Before being acquired by The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Dr. Shin was an executive vice chair and vice chair of clinical affairs at the University of New Mexico’s School of Medicine in Albuquerque from 2021 to 2023. During her tenure there, she was instrumental in revising the epilepsy surgical program, collaborating with surgeons to create a successful initiative that significantly improved patient outcomes. Dr. Shin’s efforts were deeply appreciated by patients and their families, reflecting her dedication to enhancing the quality of life for those affected by epilepsy.
Between 2011 and 2020, Dr. Shin served as an associate professor and medical director of epilepsy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She also directed the epilepsy fellowship program at the university, where she played a pivotal role in training future neurologists.
Dr. Shin’s academic journey began with a bachelor’s degree from Ewha Woman’s University in South Korea in 2000 and a second Bachelor of Science in pre-medicine from the Pennsylvania State University in University Park in 2001. She then earned an MD from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 2006. These academic achievements laid the foundation for Dr. Shin’s expertise in neurology and epilepsy.
Following her degrees, Dr. Shin completed a residency in neurology at Wake Forest University from 2006 to 2010 and a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital from 2010 to 2011. In addition to her education, her professional affiliations have been instrumental to her success, including serving on the division chief subcommittee of the American Academy of Neurology since 2007 and as a fellow of the American Epilepsy Society since 2009. Additionally, Dr. Shin’s participation in the women leading in neurology program at the American Academy of Neurology in 2022 underscores her leadership within the field.
