Roger H. Howe, taekwondo master and owner of the Whitewright Martial Arts Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in martial arts.
Mr. Howe has cultivated a distinguished career, marked by his former success in banking and continuing contributions to martial arts as an esteemed taekwondo master and owner of the Whitewright Martial Arts Center in Whitewright, Texas. For nearly four decades, he has dedicated himself to teaching martial arts to students of all ages, leveraging his extensive background as a sixth-degree black belt to serve his community. Initially establishing his dojo in 1993 with a business partner and fellow black belt, Mr. Howe became the sole owner of his school five years later.
Whitewright Martial Arts Center offers classes every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Mr. Howe teaches taekwondo during the evenings. He also began teaching tai chi in the afternoons in 2018. His school focuses heavily on respect, patience, bravery, politeness and always striving to be the best. Additionally, Mr. Howe concentrates on teaching self-confidence to his students and the ability to defend oneself from attacks.
Having retired from Bank of America in 2016 after decades in the industry, Mr. Howe successfully balanced his passion for martial arts with his full-time corporate career. His role at Bank of America as a computer programmer and systems analyst — alongside his extensive background in mainframe and microcomputer programming — was particularly noteworthy, reflecting a high level of proficiency that has been instrumental in his professional success.
Mr. Howe’s ability to balance both demanding careers is a testament to his exceptional organizational skills and unwavering determination. During periods of low student enrollment at his dojo, he often utilized his income from his role at Bank of America to keep the Whitewright Martial Arts Center afloat. This dedication has benefited his students and enriched Mr. Howe’s professional life with invaluable perseverance.
Before entering the corporate sector, Mr. Howe was recognized for his distinguished service in the United States Air Force, where he achieved the rank of captain. As a pilot of C-130 aircraft in the 41st Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron, he was initially stationed at Hamilton Air Force Base in San Rafael, California, before relocating to McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento, California. Mr. Howe’s journey through the ranks from second lieutenant during undergraduate pilot training at Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring, Texas, to first lieutenant and then captain underscores his commitment and skill as an aviator.
Mr. Howe’s foundation was laid at Purdue University, where he graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics, a minor in physics and an option in computer science. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force shortly after graduating from college. Following his service in the military, Mr. Howe began his long and successful career in computer programming.
In addition to his professional endeavors, Mr. Howe is actively involved in civic activities within his community. Most notably, he serves on the library board for the City of Whitewright, demonstrating his commitment to fostering educational resources and community engagement.
Looking ahead, Mr. Howe aims to achieve grandmaster status in taekwondo by testing for a seventh-degree black belt. The principles of perseverance he learned from his martial arts training have been pivotal throughout his life, reflecting a never-give-up attitude.
