Fabien Delerue, Associate Professor at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Higher Education.

Dr. Delerue, a leading researcher and educator, has been a faculty member at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, the largest cancer center in the world, in Houston since 2023 as an associate professor in the department of genetics, division of discovery science, and as the director of the genetically engineered mouse facility. His research focuses on developing models of human diseases to enable other researchers to create new medicines and therapies. He also identifies the underlying mechanisms of the disease and strives to understand what goes wrong. Moreover, Dr. Delerue replicates these mechanisms in cells and animal models, particularly mice, which allows researchers valuable support for developing new treatments.

Launching his career over two decades ago as a research assistant at Roche Pharmaceuticals in the CNS department, Dr. Delerue served in this capacity from 2002 to 2007. He then joined the University of New South Wales in Sydney (UNSW) in Sydney as a senior research assistant within the university’s Brain and Mind Research Institute, where he was active between 2007 and 2013. From there, he became a manager of the university’s transgenic animal unit from 2013 to 2018 and as the head of the transgenic animal unit between 2015 and 2018. Moreover, Dr. Delerue garnered experience on campus as a lecturer from 2016 to 2018 and as a visiting fellow between 2018 and 2021. During his tenure at UNSW, he also served as the founding and managing director of Ideal Genetics Ltd. in Sydney from 2017 to 2024 and as a senior lecturer at Macquarie University in Sydney between 2018 and 2023.

Highly educated in his field, Dr. Delerue received a Bachelor of Science in cell biology and a Master of Science in cell biology and physiology from the Université de Bordeaux in 2000 and 2002, respectively. He also garnered a Doctor of Philosophy in neuroscience and genetics from the University of Sydney in 2013, followed by a postdoctoral research fellowship in the school of medical sciences from UNSW in 2015.

Dr. Delerue is a professional member, board of directors and chair of the International Society for Transgenic Technologies since 2023, a member of the Australian Gene Editing Network and the International Mammalian Genome Society, and a founding member of the Oceania Society for Transgenic and Assisted Reproduction Technologies. Throughout his impressive career, he has also been active on various professional committees, such as the scientific advisory committee for Transgenic Core at Baylor University’s college of medicine since 2024.

As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Delerue has co-authored numerous scholarly articles and other published works. He has also become active by giving presentations on the intersection of science and religion, discussing how they can coexist and complement each other while addressing common misconceptions.

Dr. Delerue’s most notable achievements during his career included recognition as the first to utilize CRISPR Cas9, a groundbreaking technology that recently earned a Nobel Prize. Developed by an American woman and a French woman, he became an early adopter of the technology in Australia. He continues to utilize the experience he gained during this time at MD Anderson to advance such cutting-edge technology. Dr. Delerue was honored with a 3R Award for Ethical Considerations in Animal Research in 2023. In the near future, he aims to achieve the rank of full professor while securing additional funding for projects that focus on rare genetic diseases, including childhood dementia and Foxg1 Syndrome, to advance research and eventually find cures for these childhood-related rare disorders.
