Dr. Vartuhi Tonoyan, assistant professor at Fresno State, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in business education.
Across a professional life spanning 25 years, Dr. Tonoyan has established herself as a strong teacher in the realm of business and management. Since 2024, she has served as an associate professor of entrepreneurship and management at Fresno State’s Craig School of Business. Dr. Tonoyan has been associated with Fresno State as an associate professor since 2020 and was previously a visiting scholar at the University of Alberta’s Alberta School of Business. Prior to this, she contributed as faculty at the Stevens Institute of Technology’s School of Business and visiting assistant professor at the same institution’s Howe School of Technology Management. Dr. Tonoyan’s earlier career includes time spent at the University of Mannheim Business School in Germany, the Institute for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SME) Research, the University of Massachusetts Boston, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Throughout her many roles, she has continued research focused on how gender, racial and institutional differences influence entrepreneurial success.
Prior to embarking upon her professional journey, Dr. Tonoyan built a strong foundation in her own education, beginning by obtaining a diploma in economics from the Yerevan State University of National Economy in Armenia in 1999. She moved to Germany to attend postgraduate studies in social research methods, focusing on sociology and psychology, at the University of Mannheim’s School of Social Sciences. Dr. Tonoyan stayed at the University of Mannheim to earn a PhD in management, graduating summa cum laude in 2009. Subsequently, she became a visiting postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. Further solidifying her expertise, Dr. Tonoyan has devoted herself to lifelong learning with various programs through California State University, Fresno. She has completed certification in online training for tenure-track faculty, online professional training, foundations of virtual instruction, teaching with resilient course design, and inclusive teaching for equitable learning.
Noted for her achievements, Dr. Tonoyan has been celebrated with a number of accolades for her research and academic publications. Among others, she was presented with the Best Paper Award from the Academy of Management’s Entrepreneurship Division in 2006, the Outstanding Reviewer Award from the Journal of Business Venturing in 2011, the Best Paper Award from the Interdisciplinary European Conference on Entrepreneurship Research in 2014, and the Craig School of Business Faculty Award for Research in 2024. Additionally, Dr. Tonoyan was added to the Responsible Research in Business and Management Honor Roll in 2023. Beyond her primary vocation, she has been a devoted wife for over 20 years and enjoys playing piano, painting, cooking, and singing Russian music from the 1920s. For the foreseeable future, Dr. Tonoyan intends to continue publishing in academic journals and sharing her insight. She also hopes to begin taking on consultancy projects to help build up countries like Armenia and Ukraine.
