Wayne Wanta, professor emeritus at the University of Florida, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Education for dedication, achievements, and leadership in education.

Dr. Wanta, an esteemed educator, is recognized for his leadership as a professor emeritus in the journalism department at the University of Florida. Having begun his tenure at the university in 2011, he also taught at several other institutions throughout his career in higher education, including as a professor at the University of Missouri in Columbia from 2001 to 2011, where he also served as the executive director of the Center for the Digital Globe on campus for several years. Other academic appointments included associate professor at the University of Florida in Gainesville between 1999 and 2001 and the University of Oregon in Eugene from 1992 to 1999, and an assistant professor at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale between 1989 and 1992. Besides his extensive background as an educator, Dr. Wanta was a copy editor for the Post-Courier in Charleston, South Carolina, the Albuquerque Journal, the Dallas Times Herald, and the Austin Am.-Statesman, beginning in 1980, and a sports writer for the Wisconsin State Journal in Madison from 1978 to 1980.

In preparation for his future, Dr. Wanta received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 1980, followed by a Master of Arts and a PhD from the University of Texas Austin in 1989. Besides his formal education, he has been affiliated with the World Association for Public Opinion Research and the International Communications Association and as a member and past president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, the largest journalism education organization in the world with over 3,700 members.

Beyond his primary career endeavors, Dr. Wanta delegated two World Journalism Education Congress meetings and has given lectures and presented research in 65 countries. He has written approximately 200 research articles and papers, of which many focused on political communication. Furthermore, he published eight books, including “Visual Communication Theory and Research: A Mass Communication Perspective” as a co-author in 2014 with Shahira Fahmy and Mary Angela Bock. Dr. Wanta’s accomplishments have also included receiving a Fulbright scholarship to Iceland and Kosovo and numerous accolades, including several Top Faculty Paper Awards from professional organizations, a Krieghbaum Under 40 Award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, a Book Award from the National Communication Association and a Paul J. Deutschmann Award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication as the first faculty member at the University of Florida to have ever received the accolade.
