Ms. Dupont is a distinguished Italian teacher at Newton North High School in Newtown, Massachusetts, who has been instrumental in students’ success since 2015. Her role as a high school instructor comes after teaching the language at Boston College from 2014 to 2015.
As a high school language teacher, Ms. Dupont teaches all levels of Italian, including Instructing Italian II, an intermediate-level course, and an advanced-placement-level course. She teaches four classes per day on campus. She also recently created a new course focusing on Italian American culture to help students connect with the history behind the culture. Besides her primary obligations, Ms. Dupont co-organizes exchange trips to Florence, Italy, for her students, where she helps manage the itinerary, documents, and the selection process in collaboration with several other schools. Furthermore, she involves her students in various projects and events to connect her school with the consulate.
Among other notable career accomplishments, Ms. Dupont simultaneously lectured at the University of Virginia and was an Italian language instructor at Speak! Language Center between 2006 and 2014. Her initial entry into education was an appointment at the University of Notre Dame.
Throughout her career, she has also become involved with the national academy exam and has worked with the College Board on the advanced placement program. She has also been a freelance professional translator based in Newton since 1999.
In preparation for her career, Ms. Dupont studied in her native country of Italy, receiving a bachelor’s degree in business and managerial economics from the Università degli Studi di Firenze in Florence in 1997. She returned to college at age 40, receiving a master’s degree in level I and II foreign language pedagogy from the Università Ca’ Foscari in Venice in 2012.
Adding to her credentials, Ms. Dupont is active with several industry-related organizations, such as the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, the American Association of Teachers of Italian, the American Translators Association and the American Association for Italian Studies. These affiliations have been instrumental in her ability to remain abreast in her field while networking with others.
Among Ms. Dupont’s most notable achievements outside the classroom have been authoring and co-authoring several textbooks. She has also been lauded for her expertise as a speaker and presenter at numerous professional conferences.
Influenced by her mother, a former teacher, to follow in her footsteps, Ms. Dupont recalls watching her at home as she would prepare in the evenings for the next school day. She would also pretend to teach her dolls at home, emulating her mother’s enthusiastic teaching style. Despite knowing it would be demanding, Ms. Dupont chose the teaching field anyway and is grateful she did.
Reflecting on her career, Ms. Dupont believes that her personal experiences have helped shape her professional journey and have allowed her to better understand students’ perspectives, especially with so many children struggling with anxiety and mental health issues. As she prepares for the future, she intends to continue teaching while improving her relationships with her students as she ages.
