Linda W. Powell, MD, Special Assistant to the Vice President for STEM and Interim Associate Provost at Community College of Philadelphia, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Medicine and Higher Education.
Dr. Powell, a physician and leader in higher education, has been involved in higher education for more than 30 years. Since 2009, she has been a faculty member at the Community College of Philadelphia as a professor of biology. In 2023, she also took on the role of special assistant to the vice president for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) outreach and engagement and as the interim associate provost. Dr. Powell’s responsibilities are wide-ranging, including lecturing, working with other faculty and staff to develop innovative educational strategies and resources, coordinating federal grants and initiatives to enhance STEM education, and increasing student engagement in STEM.
During her tenure at the Community College of Philadelphia, Dr. Powell served as the biology department chair from 2001 to 2023. She began her career there in 1997 as an assistant professor of biology and served as an associate professor of biology from 2003 to 2009. Her expertise in anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and STEM education have been pivotal to her success.
Dr. Powell graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor’s degree. She then studied at the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine, receiving a Doctor of Medicine. Besides her education, she has garnered success with several leading industry-related organizations, such as the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, and through her role as the first vice-chair and member of the board of directors of Greater Philadelphia Health Action. Reflecting on her career, Dr. Powell, who was recognized for her success in the classroom with a Limbach Award for Faculty of the Year by the Community College of Philadelphia in 2006, attributes much of her success to her late father, a full professor of surgery, for setting a high standard. As she prepares for retirement in the coming years, she is satisfied with her contributions and the legacy she will leave behind.
