Dr. Phung is recognized for his distinguished tenure in higher education as a professor at his alma mater, Methodist University, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, since 1995. Over the past 30 years on campus, he has become widely recognized and respected for his contributions to the institution. In addition to teaching and designing new courses for the general chemistry program, Dr. Phung mentors his students, guiding them throughout their journey as they become more well-rounded in the field of chemistry.
Since joining Methodist University, Dr. Phung has been responsible for many other accomplishments, including using 3D printing to help improve the general chemistry laboratory, which can print chemistry models and equipment for his classes.
Dr. Phung began his teaching career as a teaching assistant at Duke University while pursuing his doctorate. He started working in the laboratory and quickly became responsible for reviewing and grading assignments. This experience was foundational to his decision to pursue education as a career after college, as he discovered a passion for teaching and enjoyed the process of conveying knowledge to students. Dr. Phung’s subsequent expertise in physical, inorganic, computational, analytical and quantum chemistry and his expertise in chemical analysis techniques, spectroscopy and instrumentation, and kinetics have also been instrumental in his ability to teach in the higher education sector.
In preparation for his future, Dr. Phung received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Methodist College (now Methodist University) in 1987. He also completed a Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry from Duke University in 1992 and postdoctoral work at the University of Utah. In addition to his formal education, Dr. Phung received several professional designations from Coursera in Python and technical support fundamentals, LinkedIn in public speaking for non-native English speakers, and SAS in visual analytics and visual statistics.
As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Phung has disseminated his findings in various scholarly journals and served as a reviewer for several of them. Moreover, he remains active in several professional organizations, including the American Chemical Society, to stay at the forefront of his industry.
Dr. Phung recognizes that he is in the final phase of his career. As he prepares for retirement within the next few years, he is eager to complete some of his most important work and have it published for the benefit of the community. Dr. Phung’s remarkable career has been supported by the guidance and support of numerous mentors and colleagues, and he is grateful for all his accomplishments. He also notes one individual, a friend of 40 years, who was instrumental in his success in leading a department that experienced tremendous growth under his leadership.
Drawing significant rewards from his work, Dr. Phung is immensely proud of his former students who have succeeded in their chosen fields. It is always a pleasure when he has the chance to reconnect with them and learn about all they have accomplished. Dr. Phung also holds Methodist University in high regard, which was the institution where he earned his undergraduate degree in chemistry and later led a long and successful career in teaching, allowing him to grow personally and professionally.
