Richard Ferrell, psychiatrist and associate professor of psychiatry at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in higher education.

With five and a half decades of experience, Dr. Ferrell has established a successful career in higher education, specializing in clinical work. He currently serves as an associate professor of psychiatry and as a psychiatrist at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. In this role, he teaches three medical courses at Dartmouth, including “On Doctoring,” a problem-based learning course for second-year students, and “Psychology of Illness,” which introduces humanities into medical education. His experience also includes roles as an assistant professor of psychiatry at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth from 1975 to 1981 and as an associate professor of psychiatry at Dartmouth College. He also served in the Navy for seven years, including two years of active duty as a Navy doctor at Naval Hospital Pensacola.

Laying an educational foundation, Dr. Ferrell earned a Bachelor of Arts from DePauw University in 1965 and a Doctor of Medicine from Indiana University in 1969. He became a diplomate in behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry in 2006, earned certification in geriatric psychiatry in 2001, and has been a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology since 1975. His contributions include developing and teaching “The History of the Field of Medicine” course at Dartmouth in 2022, publishing articles in professional journals, serving on the board of Opera North in New Hampshire from 1991 to 1997, and volunteering for medical work in Papua New Guinea, Ukraine, and Honduras.

Additionally, Dr. Ferrell has been a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society since 1969, an electrical councilor for the American Neuropsychiatric Association in 2012, an electrical fellow in 2010, and a distinguished life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Beyond his medical and academic roles, he dedicated nearly three decades to coaching girls’ basketball for the Hanover Recreation Department from 1982 to 2009. Looking to the future, he plans to reduce his teaching commitments, scaling back from three classes to two, to prioritize personal time, travel, and maintaining an active lifestyle.
