Orien L. Tulp, PhD, Professor at USAT Montserrat, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Education.
Dr. Tulp, an esteemed professor and the president and founder of the University of Science, Arts and Technology (USAT) Montserrat since 2003, has spent the past two decades dedicated to the institution’s and students’ success. In addition to teaching an array of medical basic sciences curriculum courses to Doctor of Medicine students and to Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery students, he provides student advising and mentorship to graduate and medical students.
Founded by Dr. Tulp to address a specific need in Caribbean education, he has focused on creating excellence and global standards. Unlike many medical schools in the Caribbean, his institution has become known for its comprehensive academic platform. Dr. Tulp’s expertise in nutritional medicine, nutritional biochemistry and medical biochemistry, as well as his extensive proficiency in training individuals in the medical field, have been pivotal to his success.
Before establishing USAT, Dr. Tulp enjoyed a successful career in the classroom, which spanned decades. Initially, he taught as an associate professor at Colby Community College in Colby, Kansas, from 1981 to 1983. He then became a professor at Drexel University in Philadelphia between 1983 and 2004.
Highly educated, Dr. Tulp earned an associate degree in medical psychology from Carnegie Mellon University, followed by a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science in physiology and biophysics, and a Doctor of Philosophy in medical pharmacology from the University of Vermont. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship on campus. Additionally, Dr. Tulp has been a certified nutrition specialist for over 40 years.
As a seasoned medical researcher and scholar, Dr. Tulp has contributed over 800 scholarly articles to research journals, authored over two dozen book chapters and served on the editorial review boards for several leading medical journals. One of his most recent book chapters was on the interrelationship between cortisol and insulin and how these hormones influence metabolism.
Active in his professional community, Dr. Tulp is affiliated with the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, the American College of Nutrition, the American Society for Nutrition and the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. He was also elected as a fellow of the American College Administration. Civically, Dr. Tulp honorably served his country in the U.S. Army for over four decades and remains active as a member of his local American Legion. He also volunteered with hundreds of medical civic action mission teams in the U.S. and abroad, provided medical support at public events like the Jerry Lewis Skate-A-Thons, and performed athletic screenings for students.
Dr. Tulp received a National Career Service Award Fellowship from the National Institutes of Health. Throughout his career, he was also acknowledged for his research and published works and notably received some of the highest teaching evaluations from the university. Honoring his service, Dr. Tulp was decorated with an Army Commendation Medal, an Army Superior Unit Award, a Legion of Merit and a Military Service Award. He credits his success to his passion for teaching and effective communication skills. His intentions include continuing to pursue teaching and publishing and giving back to his industry as much as possible.
