Melvin Gupton, PhD, Associate Teaching Professor and Program Chair at Pennsylvania State University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Higher Education and Public Service.

An experienced educator, Dr. Gupton joined Pennsylvania State University in University Park in 2017 as an associate professor of corporate communication and program chair. Recruited from Walsh College in Troy, Michigan, he taught on campus from 2014 to 2017. He also spent years in the classroom as an adjunct instructor at Wayne State University in Detroit in the college of fine, performing and communications arts between 2007 and 2017 and in the same capacity at Henry Ford College in Dearborn, Michigan. Throughout his tenure, Dr. Gupton has taught business and professional communication, organizational communication, public speaking, business communication methods and technical writing courses. His ability to engage students through instruction and his novel communication research methods have been instrumental in his academic success.

Aside from his classroom hours, Dr. Gupton worked in the public sector for over 25 years for the City of Detroit. Working his way up to the chief of staff for the Detroit workforce development department between 2001 and 2008, he also served as the interim director, then deputy from 2008 to 2011. Dr. Gupton pivoted into academia full-time upon completing his doctorate. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in journalism, a Master of Arts in public relations and organizational communication, and a Doctor of Philosophy in organizational communication from Wayne State University in 1992, 1996, and 2017, respectively.

Besides his work-related obligations, Dr. Gupton is a professional member of the National Communication Association, the Eastern Communication Association and the Philadelphia Public Relations Association. Civically, he enjoys serving as an advisor and mentor for The Men of Color Leadership Academy. Dr. Gupton has contributed to various works, including co-authoring a chapter in a book on organizational diversity and an entry in the encyclopedia on issue management. His success has been recognized with an Outstanding Faculty, Advising and Mentoring Award for the 2021-2022 academic school year. Preparing for future goals once he retires from higher education, he is eager to expand his knowledge base in digital marketing and delve into book publishing.
