Valerie Nyberg, adjunct professor at Northwestern College, adjunct professor at Alder Graduate College of Education, and founder and owner at Liminal Consulting and Coaching, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in academia.
With over two and a half decades of experience, Dr. Nyberg has built a distinguished career in academia. She currently serves as an adjunct professor at Northwestern College, a role she has held since 2023, and at Alder Graduate College of Education since 2022. She is also the founder and owner of Liminal Consulting and Coaching, established in 2021. Her experience also includes serving as principal for Ames Community Schools from 2020 to 2021, associate principal for Cedar Rapids Community School District from 2013 to 2020, policy analyst for West Wind Education Policy, Inc. from 2011 to 2013, program director at the University of Iowa and Iowa City Community School District from 2008 to 2012, and assistant project director for Iowa City Community School District from 2008 to 2011.
Laying a solid educational foundation, Dr. Nyberg earned a Bachelor of Education in English and communication from Western Washington University in 1999, a Master of Arts in English language and literature from Western Washington University in 2004, and a certification in educational administration with a PK-12 principal endorsement from the University of Iowa in 2007. She completed her PhD in secondary English education and teaching at the University of Iowa in 2012 and is on track to earn a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing, nonfiction, from Antioch University in 2024. She is also actively involved in professional and community organizations, including the Association for Talent Development, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the Regional 9 Equity Board, and as a court-appointed special advocate. She takes great pride in being the first African-American woman to serve as principal of Ames High School. In light of her impressive undertakings, she was recognized with several honors, including the Assistant Secondary Principal of the Year award from the School Administrators of Iowa in 2019, an award for her enrichment program for African-American students, and various scholarships and fellowships.
Reflecting on her journey, Dr. Nyberg, a single mother raised by a single parent, is deeply committed to ensuring that her children and other Black and brown children have better access to educational services and opportunities. Her most notable achievements include being named secondary assistant principal of the year by the School Administrators of Iowa, as well as being the first African-American woman to serve as principal of Ames High School, which was the top-rated high school in Iowa during her tenure. She attributes her success to having a legacy in her family and offering her own children better access to things. Looking to the future, she wants to publish books and launch a successful business, as well as to work in public speaking and conduct workshops, a with a short-term goal is to do coaching. She is also open to working at Western Washington University if the right position comes up.
