A leading expert in the medical field, Dr. Slater is a specialist in family medicine, primary care, integrative medicine and public health. He has dedicated his career to the classroom and has taught at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) in San Antonio, Texas, since 2019. Hired as an assistant professor, Dr. Slater became an associate professor in 2023, leading clinical skills training during the first two years of medical school and focusing on integrating lifestyle and integrative medicine into the curriculum. This training encompasses medical interviewing, communication, documentation, organization, clinical reasoning and simulation procedures. Additionally, Dr. Slater develops the pre-clinical curriculum by selecting topics and integrating integrative medicine aspects into the program.
Before joining UIW, Dr. Slater was affiliated with the University of Texas Medical Branch from 2019 to 2022. He also served as an integrative and behavioral medicine fellow and clinical instructor on campus between 2016 and 2017 before serving as an attending physician and clinical assistant professor until 2019. Furthermore, Dr. Slater garnered experience as a resident physician through the Memorial Hermann Family Medicine Residency Program in Houston from 2013 to 2016.
Choosing to pivot into education, Dr. Slater initially became fascinated by the field after recognizing the lack of integrative and behavioral medicine and the shortage of practicing physicians, putting patients on waiting lists for months. Quickly understanding the need to train the next generation of physicians to meet this demand, he transitioned into teaching full-time at UIW.
In preparation for his medical career, Dr. Slater received a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2008. Subsequently, he earned a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2013 and a Master of Public Health in global health from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in 2016. Dr. Slater received his medical license and became board-certified in family medicine from the Texas Medical Board. He also received board-certified in integrative medicine from the American Board of Integrative Medicine.
Dr. Slater contributes to national board exams as a member and developer of the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners. He has also been active professionally as a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, as a faculty course director for the Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine, as a reviewer for the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination and as an adviser for the University of the Incarnate Word Lifestyle Medicine Interest Group. Civically invested, Dr. Slater enjoys his role as a volunteer adviser for the UIW Composting Program for Sustainable Future, Student Alliance and Medicine Group.
In the next decade, Dr. Slater plans to continue developing the initiatives established at UIW. Among his top interests, he aims to emphasize lifestyle and integrative medicine in the national board exam to influence curricula nationwide. Dr. Slater credits his success thus far to his keen interest and enthusiasm for his field. He thoroughly enjoys assisting patients and believes a medical career is the most effective way to contribute positively to society.
