Robert Pierce Patrick Jr., PhD, Adjunct History Instructor at Sandhills Community College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in education.
Dr. Patrick attributes his success to his strong work ethic and constant pursuit of knowledge. Since 2015, he has taught history at Sandhills Community College, striving to progress students’ appreciation for American history and politics. When he is not teaching, he is immersed in books, always seeking to expand his expertise and better himself. His passion for learning extends beyond his work to subjects such as his current fascination with the history and culture of Scotland. As an educator and an individual, he finds great joy in delving into new topics and exploring different perspectives on history.
Embracing a lifelong love of history, Dr. Patrick pursued a degree in the subject at the University of Georgia, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in history and journalism in 1980. He went on to earn a Master of Arts in history from the University of North Carolina in 1993, completing his education with a Doctor of Philosophy in history from the University of South Carolina in 2000. After receiving a bachelor’s degree, he began his career at WTOB-AM and WFIS-AM, Tribune Times as an account executive. In 1982, he joined WGHP-TV as a sales assistant, shifting to become a research assistant for WHNS-TV and Arbitron Ratings Company while studying for his graduate degrees. Once he completed his doctoral studies, he pursued a career in academia, joining the faculty of High Point University as an adjunct history instructor. In his next position at Greensboro College, he continued as an adjunct history professor, later moving to pursue a similar role at Randolph Community College. As a supplement to his career in higher education, he has served as a substitute teacher in Chatham County Schools since 2011.
Reflecting on his 20-year career, Dr. Patrick emphasizes the importance of continuous learning and adaptation. He has learned that resting on one’s laurels is insufficient, as a degree does not equate to knowing everything about a subject. To truly grow professionally, he believes in staying current with new developments and expanding knowledge beyond the immediate field. For example, he frequently draws comparisons between American history and global contexts, emphasizing that social security systems were implemented in countries like Germany and Britain long before they were established in the United States.
Of all his career achievements, one of Dr. Patrick’s proudest accomplishments is having his work published, as seeing his name in print gives him a great sense of fulfillment. Two other significant achievements were his induction into Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest academic honor society in the United States, and his invitation to join Mensa, a nonprofit organization providing community for those with high intelligence quotients (IQ). He is a former member of the American Historical Association, the North Carolina Historical Association and the Virginia Historical Society. Outside of his career, he is passionate about protecting animal rights and sponsors the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Moving forward, he plans to continue teaching and remains open to opportunities where his skills and experience might be utilized.
