Parveen Chopra, Former Chairman with the Human Rights Commission of Nassau County and a Retired Commissioner of Planning and Professor, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in management education.
A graduate of Punjab University, Dr. Chopra initially earned a Master of Arts in sociology in 1966. Soon thereafter, he enrolled in the Tata Institute of Social Sciences and received a Master of Arts in personnel management and industrial relations in 1968. By 1970, Dr. Chopra had graduated from the University of Mumbai with a Bachelor of Laws. Dr. Chopra concluded his academic efforts at the City University of New York, obtaining a Master of Philosophy in 1993 and a Doctor of Philosophy in business administration in 1997.
At the start of his illustrious career, Dr. Chopra worked as an instructor of management at Rutgers University from 1976 to 1978. Consequently, he excelled in the same role with Hofstra University for seven years, before joining Long Island University as an assistant professor of management from 1985 to 1986. He later held the same title at Kean University and the C.W. Post Campus until 1998. Moreover, he flourished as the commissioner of planning from 1996 to 2002. Today, he serves as the director of the Civil Liberties Union of New York, a position he has held since 2006.
For his accomplishments in the field, Dr. Chopra has been the recipient of numerous accolades including the Liberty Bell Award from the Nassau County Bar Association, the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Community Service Award from the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate and the Martin Luther King Philanthropy Award, to name a few. In a career filled with highlights, Dr. Chopra is proud to have taught over 10,000 students between undergraduate, graduate and doctorate levels at multiple universities and observing what they have done with their lives. Additionally, he was grateful to have served as the president of the Federation of Indian American Association in 1987 and to have worked under two presidents as a liaison to the Indian community. He equates his success to a philosophy of compassion, determination and resilience when encountered with adversity. Dr. Chopra hopes to persist in his philanthropic efforts in the future.
