Marcus J. Newsome, EdD, senior adviser at Education Partners, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in educational development.

Building on over 40 years in education, Dr. Newsome has established himself as a respected figure in the realm of school leadership and development. Beginning in 1999, he served as the executive director for Prince George’s County Public Schools. Dr. Newsome’s tenure as a superintendent for Newport News Public Schools led to all of the high schools in the district being listed in the Best High Schools in America by Newsweek. During this time, he also contributed as an associate professor of practice at Harvard University. Dr. Newsome held the position of superintendent for Chesterfield County Public Schools for 10 years and later accepted the role of director of the Virginia Superintendent’s Leadership Academy at the Virginia Association of School Superintendents. In 2023, Dr. Newsome became a senior adviser for Education Partners, where he offers insight from his years of administration experience.

Dr. Newsome’s successful career is backed by a strong academic foundation. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in art education from Elizabeth City State University in 1975, followed by a master’s degree in administration and supervision from Bowie State University in 1992. Dr. Newsome earned a doctorate in religious education from the International Seminary in 2000 and a Doctor of Education in educational leadership and administration from Bowie State University in 2005. He co-authored his first book, “Breakthrough Leadership: Six Principles Guiding Schools Where Inequity Is Not an Option,” in 2020. Mr. Newsome’s autobiography, “Transcend: My Story of Resilience, Faith & Triumph From the Bottom to the Summit,” was published in 2024 and tells the story of how he overcame adversity to become a well-regarded educator. He credits his unwavering faith and belief in himself for his success.

Outside of his professional life, Dr. Newsome is a devoted husband, father to three and grandfather to three. He enjoys painting and writing in his free time. Looking ahead, Dr. Newsome hopes to spend more time with his grandchildren while continuing to mentor future school leaders. He has also started the process of writing his third book and aims to positively impact those who read it. Dr. Newsome also intends to commit more time to researching and understanding the growing field of artificial intelligence, with an eye toward exploring how those tools can be leveraged to help educators.
