Greg Hull, MFA, Dean and Professor of Sculpture at the Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University, Indianapolis, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in art education.
With nearly 40 years of experience in the field of sculpture and art education to his credit, Mr. Hull currently excels as the dean and professor of sculpture at the Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University Indianapolis. Instrumental in shaping the academic and artistic landscape in the latter post at Herron since 1998, his tenure as dean began in 2020, a position in which he oversees the integration of diverse disciplines such as music therapy and music technology into the aforementioned school’s curriculum, enhancing its longstanding art therapy program. Mr. Hull was additionally active at the Herron School of Art and Design as the chairman of fine arts from 2017 to 2020.
Since 1997, Mr. Hull has found further success as the owner of GEO Studios LLC, where he continues to explore interactive and kinetic media. His expertise spans various mediums including interactive, kinetic, and time-based media that incorporate light, sound, and video. Likewise, his proficiency in wood fabrication, metalwork, welding, foundry techniques, motion, sculpture, and digital images has earned him recognition within industry-related organizations such as the National Association Schools of Art Design and the Indiana University Alliance of Distinguished and Titled Professors. Moreover, Mr. Hull has been appointed as the commissioner for the Indiana Arts Commission since 2019.
Mr. Hull’s educational background laid a strong foundation for his career achievements, having initially obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in sculpture at the Kansas City Art Institute in 1985. He ultimately concluded his studies with a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the University of Delaware in 1991. He was exposed to art at an early age through his mother, a speech therapist who painted daily and instilled in him an appreciation for creativity and its impact on wellness. Mr. Hull’s upbringing also inspired his commitment to ensuring that art be accessible to all and advocating for its integration into various mediums.
Throughout his career, Mr. Hull has been involved in civic associations and community efforts focused on arts promotion and advocacy. He has thrived with his immersive and engaging artistic pursuits as well, including notable projects such as “Breath” in 2009, “Amelia’s Gate” in 1997, “Aurora” in 1999, “Night Orchid,” and “Vicarious.” His dedication to artistic projects in Indiana is reflected in his receipt of several prestigious accolades, including the Bicentennial Medal for Distinguished Service from Indiana University in 2020. Distinguished as an Efroymson Contemporary Arts Fellow, Mr. Hull is also a two-time recipient of the Creative Renewal Fellowship and one of two inaugural recipients of the Arts Council of Indianapolis’ Transformational Impact Fellowship.
Looking toward the future, Mr. Hull is committed to expanding upon his work with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients by developing tools that enable them to express themselves artistically despite their physical limitations. He believes strongly in the healing power of art and aims to further integrate it into conversations about health sciences by advocating for STEAM education, emphasizing the importance of arts alongside the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
