The Rev. M. Carmel Chery, dean of the chapel and spiritual engagement at Voorhees University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in education and religion.
Rev. Chery has built a successful career in education and religious, currently serving as the dean of the chapel and spiritual engagement, as well as an assistant professor of theological studies at Voorhees University, a role she has held since 2023. In this capacity, she works to foster a supportive and inclusive community environment where individuals can freely express themselves and lead fulfilling lives. She offers counseling and religious support and engages in campus ministry through initiatives such as The Fellowship Place, a welcoming space for students to gather outside of academic settings, and open mic sessions for students to share their thoughts and emotions. Her experience also includes serving as a faculty member, chaplain, and counselor at Faculté des Sciences Infirmières de l’Université Épiscopale d’Haïti in Léogâne, Haiti, in 2020, and working with several parishes in Jeremie, Cap-Haitien, and Leogane, Haiti. She has also served as an official delegate for the Diocese of New York at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in 2011 and worked as a librarian for the public library system in Haiti from 2006 to 2008.
In addition to her role at Voorhees, Rev. Chery has been vicar at St. Philip’s Chapel since 2023 and previously completed internships with the Diocese of Upper South Carolina in 2022. She also participates in conferences with the Colleges and Universities of the Anglican Communion as a non-member participant. Reflecting on her path, she laid a solid educational foundation, earning a bachelor’s degree in religious science from the Episcopal University of Haiti in 2011, followed by a master’s degree. She was ordained as a minister in 2012 and to the priesthood in Haiti in 2014. She takes great pride in being a dedicated minister, guiding and supporting the communities she serves. She believes her ability to connect with people and provide the necessary support has transformed many lives, and she views life as a spiritual journey where embracing spirituality is essential for true living. She credits her achievements to her formative years and the valuable experiences she has had throughout her life. In the coming years, she aspires to become a prominent figure on the global stage, leading efforts to address the challenges humanity and planet Earth face.
