Dr. Denise P. King, assistant director of retirement and benefits at the New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association (NJPSA), has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in academia and administration.
With over two and a half decades of experience, Dr. King has built a distinguished career in education and administration. She has excelled as the assistant director of retirement and benefits at NJPSA since 2021. In this role, she provides consultation and strategizing for administrators’ retirement and pension plans and serves as a Medicare specialist for administrators aged 65 and older. She also coaches and mentors instructional leaders through the New Jersey Program and acts as a trauma coach and mentor for the Foundation for Educational Administration (FEA).
Dr. King was the principal of B. Bernice Young School from 2005 until her retirement in 2021. Prior to that, she served at Sutton Wood School from 2003 to 2005, vice principal at Memorial Middle School from 2000 to 2003, and teacher and computer programmer at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. Additionally, she authored “Unshakeable Faith: Navigating Racial Injustices in the American School System,” a memoir that reflects on her experiences as an administrator and explores the challenges of addressing racial inequities within the education system, and founded Dr. Denise King LLC, a company focused on supporting individuals who are often overlooked, as well as helping entrepreneurs start businesses that make a difference.
In light of her impressive undertakings, she has been honored with the Phenomenal Woman Award from the Willingboro Council of New Jersey in 2024, the Unsung Hero Award for Community Service in 2021, honored as the NJPSA Visionary Leader, Elementary Principal, and received the NAESP Distinguished Visionary Elementary Principal award, among others. Laying a solid educational foundation for these successes, she earned a bachelor’s degree in English and computer science with a minor in African American studies from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, in 1991. She went on to obtain a Master of Education in educational leadership and administration from Cheyney University of Pennsylvania in 1999, followed by a PhD in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University in 2009. She is an active member of various organizations, including the National Association of Elementary School Principals, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and the New Jersey Education Association, as well as the National Educational Association and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.
Dr. King takes immense pride in being recognized by her colleagues and peers as a National Distinguished Principal. She, along with hundreds of other principals across the country, was honored for her distinguished work, integrity, and dedication to supporting families. In 2016, she and the other recipients were invited to the White House, where they were welcomed with a red carpet and presented with a bell symbolizing their achievement. In advising aspiring professionals, she emphasizes the importance of knowing your history, learning from the past, and preparing for the future by exploring new possibilities and options. In the coming years, she hopes to continue creating a generational legacy of wealth and opportunities for her children, grandchildren, and future generations. She also remains committed to giving back to her community, ensuring her impact extends well beyond her professional career.
