Mohanad Shukry, MD, PhD, EMBA, professor and interim chair of the department of anesthesiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in health care and academia.
With nearly two decades of experience to his credit, Dr. Shukry has established a successful career in health care and academia. He currently excels in various roles, including interim chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center since 2023, executive vice chair since 2020, and professor of anesthesiology since 2017. His responsibilities in these positions include taking care of premature babies to 99-year-old patients, anesthetizing patients for surgery, developing mentors and faculty, teaching medical students, residents, and fellows in anesthesiology, engaging in science and clinical research, and managing the department as part of the executive health system. His experience also includes serving as vice chair of pediatric anesthesiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center from 2015 to 2023, associate professor of anesthesiology from 2013 to 2023, medical director of perioperative services at Children’s Hospital and Medical Center, Omaha, from 2018 to 2020, chief of pediatric anesthesiology from 2013 to 2020, and director of the pediatric anesthesiology fellowship from 2013 to 2017. He was also associate chief of the division of pediatric anesthesia at The Children’s Hospital from 2011 to 2013, program director of the pediatric anesthesia fellowship from 2010 to 2013, division chief of pediatric cardiac anesthesia from 2010 to 2013, clinical director of perioperative services at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center from 2009 to 2013, and fellow at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center from 2004 to 2005.
Dr. Shukry also dedicates his time as a senior consultant for the Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States since 2006. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, and a member of the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia and the American Society of Anesthesiologists. He is also a consultant for the Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States and a member of the Business Honor Society, Beta Gamma Sigma. He holds the Endowed Professorship in memory of Carol Lydiatt, MD, and Daniel Lydiatt, MD, and has been nominated for the Visionary Leadership in Education Award at the University of Nebraska Medical Center as well as the Development Award. Laying a solid foundation for these successes, he earned a Doctor of Medicine from Damascus University in 1997, completed an internship in surgery at the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 2001, a residency in anesthesiology at Tulane University School of Medicine in 2004, and a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 2005. He also earned a PhD in Science Education from the College of Education at the University of Oklahoma in 2013 and an Executive Master of Business Administration in business administration and management from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 2022.
Dr. Shukry attributes his success to the environment in the United States and the opportunities available to him. He credits his determination and hard work and aspires to continue having a positive impact on the people around him while growing personally and professionally. In the coming years, he hopes to continue developing people and intends to successfully lead a department of anesthesiology, focusing on people, culture, quality of care, excellent education, and outstanding research and discovery. His advice for those interested in pursuing a career in medicine is to wholeheartedly pursue their passion and commit to it, noting that while it demands hard work, the rewards are unparalleled in their lives.
